I am in Chiangmai Thailand and restoring a 23 window 1959 Bus. The car is missing an engine and could any one recommend a suitable engine e.g.1300cc or 1600cc. The car will be mainly used in this part of Thailand which have hills and mountain terrain. If a 1300 engine could go up a 1800 metre mountain, then I will stick to the small engine capacity. Thank you

If you can get a hold of a 1600, do so. They are the most common engine and it's easy to get parts for it. Plus it will give you more power to climb those hills and they usually get better gas mileage. Your bus should have originally come with a 36hp motor or a 40hp (between 1100 to 1200 cc's) but I can't remember which. Go 1600!

Hi chullas, Chiangmai is a very cool place! My feeling is that any size VW engine will do the job for you. Truckersmike is correct in that 1600 cc engine parts are easier to get but that is for the USA. Thailand is a whole other place! You might find that the smaller engines will give you better mileage. I run my bus with the 36 horse engine up and down the 7,000 ( not sure of the metric conversion it has been awhile) foot mountians where I live just fine. Of course it is not a fast ride, but wutg VW's that should go without saying!

since it sounds like you are going to be doing alot of hill driving i think a 1600cc single port would be your best bet.

If you're keeping the small nut RGB's a 1300 will take you up the hills no problem. It'll be slow going up either way. I second the motion for single port if you go 1600.

I recommend a 1914 with dual weber 44 idf carbs and mild cam. Then you can laugh your ass off at those mountains.
