View original topic: Big fuel leak scare today...

Smelled gas while on the road today and then the engine sputtered to a stop. The nipple that goes to the carburetor fuel lines came out of the housing and I was pumping gas all over the pulley.

Should I seal the nipple back in with some sleeve retainer 'Loctite' or get a new fuel pump. If I get a new pump, should I get the same one I have with the threaded inlet? Wolfsburg West lists a different fuel pump than I have for buses with an alternator (I have an alternator). What's this mean?

Thanks,

Scott

By the way, I have a 1776 with dual carbs and an alternator.

Thanks

I would stay with the same fuel pump if it worked fine before the nipple came loose. Haven't had to do that kind of repair on the fuel pump. Fuel fires scare me. I would opt for a new pump and stay with the same style you have on there.

I believe that the sleeve retainer Loctite or 3m is a good product and should make that fuel exit nipple hold like new. If someone knows better they should let you know.

Dry the nipple out, lightly rough up the end 1/4" with a bastard file, and loctite it in place. It should be fine if everything is clean and dry, and you let it set the recommended amount of time.

Thanks. Will do it this morning.

This has happened to me twice on two different motors over the years. I skirted with disaster both times and came out on the lucky end with no fire either time (both times running dual carbs on the freeway w/ fuel pumping onto a hot header!!). The zoomie chrome pumps are really bad for this. I've had two friends who have had this happen to theirs. . .

I ONLY run electric fuel pumps now. Motors w/ dual carbs start better with electric pump IMHO so it's a no-brainer to me. I would personally go electric or at the very least get one of the late style pumps that do NOT have the top w/ nipples that are just swedged into place. Good Luck!!

get a new one piece fuel pump. they are cheap and they cannot spit the fittings out. I replace the old style fuel pumps on every car that I work on.

you can also drill tap your pump for threaded barb fittings.
