Cool! How do you like it? Any pics?

Hamsterben Tue Dec 06, 2011 12:08 pm

Well no pictures and it doesn't run yet but, I'm going to be getting it back on the road soon hopefully. I just cant figure out the fuel injection. When the engine turns over gas comes out of the exhaust and I cant figure out whats wrong with what I'm assuming is the fuel injection because I rebuilt the engine last week.

Do you have a Bentley manual to use in trouble shooting the problem? www.books4cars.com in Seattle has every new/used VW Manual ever printed.

Hamsterben Tue Dec 06, 2011 1:11 pm

I don't have any 411 books but i have a few about Porsche 914 engine trouble shooting since its the same engine it has helped a little bit.

If you have gas coming out the exhaust and it won't run....its an ignition problem...not an injection problem. Check points, timing, coil voltage and advance. Ray

I solved the problem with the gas and it is getting proper spark but it still will not run Ill recheck the whole ignition

I rebuilt the distributor again and I still get spark at all four plugs. When I turn the key to on the fuel pump kicks in and the injectors click. Then when I attempt to turn the car over it is hesitant and will not start. We have rebuilt the entire motor and tested the fuel system everything appears to be working fine but the car will not start. I need help.

Ok...so injectors click when you open the throttle right? Are you sure any fuel is actually coming out of them.

Also...even if the injectors click when you turn on the key or stroke the throttle...if there are trigger point or ground issues, they may not fire while cranking.

But one thing....if the battery is in very good condition, and your timing is correct...there should be do struggling while cranking.

Bring the crank aroun to "0" as read from the fan pulley through the hole in the fan housing. Make sure that the rotor in the distributor is pointing to the notch in the distributor housing...should be about at the 4:30-5:00 position if you are viewing it with your head stuck into the engine compartment from the rear of the car.

Now...pull off the right valve cover and verify that both valves on #1 are closed and have gap.

Just a a final check, pull #1 spark plug and with a wooden dowel...evrify that you are at TDC on #1.

Verify proper distributor part #

Verify that when you turn the ditributor through a 360* turn that each trigger point fires in turn.

I suspect that you might be 90* or 180* out on distributor drive.

Also check the ground bundles on the case centerline under the central air plenum.

Make sure that the cylinder head temp sensor has a perfect connection and that the ohms read properly.

Make sure that the MPS holds vacuum and reads proper ohms. Ray

Thanks ill let you know what i find. If i am 90* or 180* out on the distributor drive how would i fix that?

raygreenwood Thu Dec 08, 2011 12:55 pm

You need to look in the books to start with. But with the engine at known TDC as mentioned in my last post, remove the distributor and with a wood dowel or a bolt with the correct thread...or with a distributor drive puller....you pull the drive pinion out of the bore. mark with a sharpy on the case...so you can see by looking downt he hole whether the slot in the top of the drive is oriented properly.
There is a diagram for this in the book. When you lower the drive back in the hole....be careful that the thrust washer stays in place.....it turns in like a 13-16* helix as the gear teeth engage. If when install it again its still out....pull it back up....turn it a little and try it again until it is correct.

If your car has D-jet injection...the distributor drive MUST be installed exactly. It cnanot be off by even one tooth.

Why? because on a carburatted car...all the distributor does is set spark timing. If you were off even by 90* on a carbed car...you just move the spark plug wires around and adjsut timing...no problem. But with D-jet...the distributor also sets injection timing. Moving the distributor that far screws that up. Ray

Thanks you were right the distributor drive was 180* out.

Hamsterben Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:46 am

Well its still not running and i still don't know why.

Mike Fisher Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:56 am

If you don't buy the Manual you'll never Get it running or Keep it running!

Hamsterben Sat Dec 10, 2011 11:29 am

Unfortunately I'm only 16 so I don't have a good job. I only have three copies of how to keep your Volkswagen alive and the shop and Haynes manuals for Porsche 914s. None of them help a ton.

Mike Fisher Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:22 pm

Well you should be looking for a better part time job & career if you want to drive a car! Money is a prerequisite to driving. I mopped floors at small businesses on Saturdays when I was 14. My son drove tractor baling hay all summers from 14-20 years old. He's 21 now and just finishing his Network Operations Certificate at Lane Community College and working full time for Abel Computers.

Uncle Mike

I got the car running I had accidentally disconnected the three ground wires from the fuel injection harness while I was doing some work it runs great just a few vacuum problems ill be re running all of the old fuel and vacuum lines later this week. :)

Congratulations on getting it running!

Mike, sounds like he is working so give the kid a break- we all have to start somewhere! If he is tackling a Type 4, he must be pretty ambitious. Also, there is no Bentley manual for the 411/412! :x

I am restoring a 1969 bug with my dad and brother and I work at camp 914 in Oregon city doing work on 914s I sold mine because I hate body work.
