Hi,
I've seen a Bambus rack on the internet.
I would like to know if its original or a repro?
Thanks!

I have a real similar rack that came in a '66 squareback I bought. I don't find any markings on it.

Just give a close look at the Nooks and Crannies. If it is totally clean, it is probably new. An original one would have at least a dust build up in the corners. A new one is around $50-$75.

The new $75 trays I saw weren't wrapped with the white stuff, but with rattan.

It's not new ,allot of dust!
The white stuff is a kind of hard plastic, some "rings" are broken.
Also the net is some brown plastic, i've never seen a original bambus to compare with my rack.

Mine is 'old' and is exactly like yours with 5 wraps of white on the straight edge & 2-5 wraps on the curved edge weaving in the single brown line. My Bambus is a Type 3 version with a little different shaped curved edge than your Bug model. Mine is still pretty good since it was only tied/hung in my '66 with shoe laces! :D We need some white plastic coated pipe clamp/mounts to mount them?

This one for $475.00?

Does it have the tag in the front center?

Unfortunately that doesn't mean much. Bob Koch reproduced the rack with tags 20 years ago, and real tags usually came off easily anyway. If it doesn't have a tag, it may have the small nail holes where the tag was attached. Push apart the wrappings around the center area and see if you can find any sign of possible nail holes. If you find them, you might have an original or at worse, a good reproduction. The two bamboo arms are what I look at when determining originality. All the originals I have seen for early bugs are wrapped 5 wraps on the ends with 3 raps in the center of the arms. Yours does not follow that pattern, but Bambus may have changed its production standards later in the run. As with most accessories......quality diminishes as the run progresses. Regardless, it is a nice looking rack, and a very useful accessory.

Mine has 2 V notches at the center and 2 holes 80mm apart left of the left bamboo strut.
