It's been a while since I last posted, but I've been working pretty hard and also buying parts, cleaning / painting pieces. At the moment the wiper assembly is apart and I'm repainting the sheet metal, waiting for breaks in bad weather.
I'm cleaning most smaller pieces in a cheap ultrasonic jewellery cleaner I got from ALDI, which is working really well to remove dirt and light corrosion. The brass parts in particular come out really nice! I will do my best to post a few photos soon (I'm slacking at work right now).
Does anyone have a suggestion of what grease to use between the wiper spindle and bearing? I had thought a marine or lithium grease would keep water out - one of the spindles that came with the car had seized completely so I'd like to prevent that happening again. Also the plastic end caps were missing, which I'm sure didn't help.
I have another question, and that is whether the Type 3 bullet turn signal bases are the same as Ghia bullet turn signal bases? They look quite similar to each other. I do have two bases at the moment, but they are both for one side of the car. They kind of give my car the appearance of looking always to one side. |

About that case:
I always measure before jumping to any conclusions.
Perhaps the last "builder" only had a wrongly thrust-cut rear main,
and used the spacer to make up the gap?
It could concievably clean up with a line-bore (or two?).
Stranger things have happened.
Many auto machine shops will measure and either bless or condemn a case for cheap, if not free.
Clean it up quickly, just enough to handle without getting slimed.
Maybe invest in a can of degreaser and a trip to the pressure washer.
(If you're feeling grateful, or want your machinist to like you).
Assemble the two case halves bare, (no bearings) and torque the six main studs/nuts/washers.
That way, your guy can just stick his gauge in there and measure.
If you bring two sludged slimer case halves, and no nuts, and...
Then you are more likely to just get an answer of some kind, and not measurements.
I would be measurng that sucker.
I measure them all.
How else you going to know, really? |

I've already sprung for a new case, thinking that the elongated bearing locating hole might not have been repairable? there were a few other things in the engine that made me a little weary, like one of the lifters was of a different profile and had smashed to pieces all through the engine. I know this probably had little to do with the case, but I wanted to be safer than sorry.
I'm going to hold onto all the parts, so if the case measures up okay I will save it for a future build. |

More pics! hahaha I will, I will - the weather has been to dreary to get a good photo in my dark work area. I'm also going to try to get a few more photos of bits and pieces than I am currently.
In the meantime, I thought I'd post a picture of the screens I'm getting cut for my fresh air boxes (3mm acrylic). The screen in mine had rotted so I scanned, measured and traced them to get some new ones cut. $$$ later they're being cut by Ponoko in NZ - way more than I'd wanted to pay but thought I'd try their cutting service.
Top two have a coarse screen incorporated in the cut; the lower two consist of an inner and outer piece which I'm going to try sandwiching some aluminium flyscreen between, before gluing it all together.

Sorry Matty, here are a few pics of what I've been up to. I'm getting things done, but lazy on the updates. I have a few more bits and pieces done in addition to the photos, including repainted wiper arms and getting started cleaning and repainting heater boxes.
Most of my engine has been ordered and should arrive in the next few weeks, ready for the build.
12V Wiper motor and assembly redone (cleaned, painted, re-greased). I'm thinking this is a '71 part from the same car as the pan?
Fresh air control levers redone (disassembled, cleaned, gre-greased).
Welded a heap of pin holes in the fresh air boxes (still need to be finished and assembled with the new screen inserts which are turning out pretty well).
Fuse box cleaned and new fuses ordered (looks better on the contacts side but it was filthy to start with).
Clean fan housing. I'm not going to go with a super detailed engine, as the car is hopefully going to be a daily driver. I like the old but clean look. 8) |

| Thanks for the heads up Matty. Truth be told though, I'm not sure budget will allow too much for extras in the way of detailing. I did have a look through IN2VWS' pics in the gallery, but couldn't find any of his detailing work. Could you send me the DSK link? |

| Man, they look awesome! I'm tempted to get my fan shroud and pulley done, but then I'm going to want to powder-coat tins etc. It's a slippery slope for me, and a cash thing. I'll see how much I can justify spending. |

This morning I went to the hardware store to buy timber and a few bits and pieces for a dolly to support the body while I get the pan sorted out. My hardware store has the added benefit of being right near where the Type 3 Contingent guys sometimes meet. Nice to see a few of you again!
Last weekend I finished cleaning up my heat exchangers and painted them with VHT. They finished up pretty good considering what they looked like to begin with. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to ensure the VHT gets heat set properly though, I had thought of putting them in a BBQ with a roasting hood? I cleaned and painted the skid plates and a few other engine pieces during the week.
Also threw a few stickers on one of my windows.. |

Just finished gluing my fresh air box screens together, I'm pretty happy with how they look - they're much cleaner looking than what was there and they'll keep the leaves out.
Not much other progress though this week, I have a lot of painting I'd like to do but it's too cold at the moment for me to get a good finish outdoors. I'm going to get some done this weekend though hopefully. |

Re-wrapped my heater boxes today after baking them under the roasting hood of my parents' BBQ (thanks!). I'm happy with how they turned out. I reused the original heat shroud thingies, which are cleaner but still unavoidably a little slimy! The tie straps were restored by cleaning the end pieces and using some sliced up 0.6mm aluminium sheet as per nassau66427's suggestion in this thread. Pretty happy with them, but found they stretched a little upon tightening. I think I may be missing a couple of straps too, but the skid plates are still firmly held in place.
New mirror! |

I made just the one set and a simpler slotted version in case the mesh didn't work out. The laser cutting turned out to be fairly expensive, but it'd probably be a little cheaper without the alternate version on the same sheet. I'm sure if I removed the etched part number it'd be cheaper again. Let me know if you'd like the cut file, I'd be happy to email it to you. |
