I am confused. I have a 1961 VW bus and am not sure what it is that I have. I thought I had a kombi. What makes a bus a standard or a Microbus or a Kombi.
thanks,

Okay, I'll bite:
Microbus = All type 2s
Standard = Only 3 windows down each side, came in two colors, with seats and interior panels (and other niceties)
Kombi = Kombination vehicle, usually one color, no interior panels, sometimes with seats (check the M-codes) only three windows down each side, used as either passenger or comercial vehicle (thus Kombination vehicle).
Deluxe = 4 windows down each side
Deluxe Samba = 4 windows down each side with skylight windows (21 or 23 window).
If I'm wrong on anything, someone correct me (Everett, you probably will).

microbus denotes that the bus has a full interior for passengers. there are three main versions: standard, deluxe and deluxe sunroof. a kombi may or may not have full seats, but definitely does not have a full headliner.
there are model numbers just to be sure.
231 = kombi
221,281 = standard microbus
241,251 = deluxe microbus
the last digit of the model number might be different for right hand drive or sunroof on kombis and standard microbuses i.e. 225 = sunroof standard
kombis were always single tone paint. microbuses were virtually always two tone paint. in 66-67 there were single tone white standards and deluxes. |

I just purchassed a '65 bus. It was sold as a Kombi, but in browsing this thread I see it is a standard. Full headliner, 2251***** id #.
Now maybe someone can answer my other question.
The bus was originally red & white, but has since been repainted OD green. The interior (panels and front 1/3-2/3 seat) is all salt & pepper / dark green. could this be original or was everything replaced?? |

| EVERYTHING HAS BEEN CHANGED OR AT LEAST DYED TO MATCH THE GREEN. ALSO A KOMBI DOESN'T HAVE AS MANY POPOUTS ON THE THREE SIDE WINDOWS(DONT REMEMBER WHICH ONE IS STATIONARY) BUT A STANDARD HAS ALL THREE POPOUTS |

jsdesign,
your bus is a standard microbus. in 1965, all microbuses (stanards and deluxes) regarless of color had the same interior. salt and pepper grey.
ODCUSTOMS,
popouts have nothing to do with the model. they were a seperate option. my 63 23-window had only two popouts while my 58 kombi had six popouts. both were factory. |
