View original topic: vintage bus appraisals in boston area...?
eric.gelfand@tch.harvard. Mon Mar 17, 2003 12:35 pm

Does anyone know of someone who has a lot of experience doing professional appraisals of vintage splitties. I am thinking of selling my 1967 camper with 90K original miles. It has some minor rust and dings, but the body is straight and rust free. New 1600 with 500 miles installed last year (I still have the original block) Inside of camper is beautiful wood interior by travel systems of Indiana. Anyone know a guru who could check it out? Thanks, Eric

i'd peruse the classifieds on this and other websites to get some comparable values. campers were selling for MAD money about a year and a half ago.

Unfortunately, even a "guru" cannot predict who comes along when, to buy what, but...There has been a 59 single cab at copley motors right next to the hancock building in back bay for about a month or two with a rebuilt 1600 from boston bob and a (not quite show quality) older restoration.
He was asking 22,500. This is a guy who normally sells old mercedes range rovers etc.. It might be interesting to know if he sold it yet. Its still on his web site: www.copleymotorcars.com/vw_drop_side_pickup1_1.html I rode by on my bike once and chatted with him, he said it could be had for 19,500.
Its kinda hard to know how much demand there is for old vw in the northeast the scene is way less active than west coast but.. split buses are pretty rare here. When was the last time you saw one? You hardly see any bays... I'm no kinda guru at all but I would be willing to take a look at it and give you the few contacts I have, maybe one of them can help.. But if your are looking for a "proffesional appraisel" why no talk to the guy at copley motors and see if you can find out who he uses?

http://www.copleymotorcars.com/vw_drop_side_pickup1_1.html says $30,800 on it.

I was going to offer $30k even but then I noticed they did not restore the gas pedal. No sale!

I would look at vehicles on this site. If you asking someone to appraise it via photos, etc., no respectable appraiser will do that.

You could also look at some of the old car value books at your local book store. Most of them are off but it's a start.

Keep in mind that any appraisal is always higher than what you could actually sell it for on the open market.

30800 miles aint it?

EverettB Tue Mar 18, 2003 11:39 am

Yes, I am that stupid.

iamdonquixote Tue Mar 18, 2003 12:15 pm

hee, hee, I thought everyone would get a laugh out of that one.. Everett, 30,800 is the supposed mileage. 22,500 is the asking price. Just look again at www.copleymotorcars.com and follow the buttons to "vw dropside pickup". You shoulda seen the condition - the bed and gates had these lumpy sections hee hee. The treasure chest had visble rust treasures etc.. To be fair to this guy, he don't know much about vw's. I 'll cruise by there again in a few months and put a post up. He told me one of his "regulars" loved it and that he purposely jacked the price up for this buyer. By the way everett great site !!
I wanted to tell the poster of this message to just look at SAMBA!! but I thought that was kinda obvious.

I love when people ask outragous prices for crap

iamdonquixote Tue Mar 18, 2003 12:26 pm

anyone that creates this site is not stoopid

people that ask 22.5k for a truck that was a 10k vehicle at best...are

bljones Tue Mar 18, 2003 2:10 pm

but he is a genius if he finds a buyer.

Eric,

I can hook you up with the local VW scene here in the Boston area. There's plenty of upcoming events and a couple good clubs that are local. E-mail me at the above address. I'm only there (in Cambridge) during the work week. I could also give you an opinion on your camper, but I'm not a professional appraiser, just a long time V-dub nut.

By the way, that pink '59 truck has been for sale for along time...
