Random Nonsense Thu Mar 20, 2003 6:08 am

I've heard of it done many a time. But what actual modifications would I need to do to a Doublecab to fit an old 911 engine? Another thing is I plan to turbocharge it. So LOTS AND LOTS of grunt. Would reinforcing the shell be a good idea? I would rather not have the thing tear itself in two.

www.356shop.com. click on outlaws to see a 911 DC . maybe a call to them would shed some light.

thanks :)

You can see that Parts Obsolete did a LOT of work on that DC to fit that engine, trans and suspension properly. They would be the ones to tell you whether or not you are nuts to attempt to shoehorn a turbo in there too. I would be very concerned about heat buildup.

Yeh, I am thinking a turbo is overkill :(

Ive now found 2 porsche engined bus's both used 2.4 litre engines... I hope a 2.7 is no longer. Ive found one for sale already in the UK and for just ú500!

note: I just reread my post... should clarify, found 2 prosche engined ones on the net, not for sale!

I am thinking about the same conversion keep me posted on your progress. I emailed the guys at 356.com,haven't heard back from them either. I can only imagine the amount of pestering they must get from us seekers of Porsche power. Anyway I could use some ideas on linkage axles oilcooler placement possible a/c installation. Anybody with knowledge of sites showing this conversion please post, Thanks.

a 2.4 is better than a 2.7, unless the 2.7 has been rebuilt with case savers or timeserts for all the head studs. 2.7s pull head studs, and the cases need $800 worth of machine work to make them useable. 2.4s don't suffer from this problem. all 911 engines, 2.0-3.3(turbo) have the same basic dimensions for the long block. the intake and exhaust take a few different shapes, but most people use webers when installing them in a bus.

I heard it was just the post '74 2.7 litre that was problematic. Kafer, it would cost another $1000 to ship to the UK I expect. Plus I have heard that the 3.2 litre engine is the same dimensions as a 2.4 or 2.7 guess what Im going for? Also I've spoken to a guy who thinks I can probably turbocharge it, theres enough space he says. Up to 380bhp BWAHAHAHAH!

john walker's workshop Mon Mar 24, 2003 1:13 pm

the 2.7 was the limit that the weaker mag engine case could handle. it is true that the earlier 2.7s that didn't have the thermal reactor exhaust were a better candidate for a rebuild, because the case was less stresses thermally, but they pull their share of studs, just not as frequently. on the later ones, the cranks generally won't turn, or will turn with difficulty, with new main bearings and the cases torqued up. they all should be align bored or honed, as well as cylinder bases trued on a mill, and the head studs and several 8mm studs inserted. and that's just for the case. they're good engines if built right, but a used 2.7 should always be considered a potential can of worms unless proven otherwise.

i've put 911 engines in several bay window busses, but no splits yet. my 63 DC is a candidate though. it will probably be a 2.7 with webers, rebuilt of course, a 901 trans, and a 911 torsion tube spliced in, with complete rear suspension and discs. the 356 shop used 944 turbo torsion tube and suspension/brakes as i recall, along with the 901 trans. i'll have to find out if that fits better. running a porsche repair shop has it's advantages.
