We finally got the jig built for doing extended thing IRS arms. We can do them either 1 inch or 1.5 inch longer than stock.

Do you have a outright purchase price? And can your jig lengthen the Beetle arm?

Outright is $350. I have to pay $50 per arm for cores. We can do beetle arms also and modify the shock mount to match the Thing mount, as well as add the extra braceing to the top of the bump stop bracket.

I was thinking that there are a few Baja guys that would rather go a little longer with a stock arm than switch to 2X2's or 3X3's just to get some more tire clearance. And the shock mount would not have to be altered.

longer and wider. 1 X 1 or 1.5 X 1.5 keeps the driveline angles sane.

the benefits of longer and wider wihout the aggravation of 3X3s. The trick would be to design it around an existing drive axle length

Have you tested the shock mounts and the bump stops out on an existing Thing?
It make no sense that you can legnthen by 1.5" and have no residual effect on shocks.
1st of all the shocks would have to be longer. otherwise what is the purpose?
2nd. would there not be a bind or chaffing of the shock at the lower mount. The angle of the shock would be less straight up and down and more of a 45 degree angle.
3rd. The bump stop would not line up at all. The angle have changed as well as the resting location (Fully collapsed) of the lower to the upper.

Exactly right The shock mount and bump stop are in the factory position, no need for modification. If you lift the car too much you may need a longer shock. I did go with longer shocks on my 74 becasue I had it lifted beyond the full extension of the shock, and never had any binding issues.

Binding issues with the shocks, CV's, or trailing arms themselves? Running stock thing Axles/CV's??

NO binding issues. Every once in a while I would get a CV click cornering under acceleration.

This is exactly what I've been looking for for my Class 11 look project, especially since I want to use the stock shock mounts. Do you make any adjustments to camber when you extend the arms? Or do you leave them stock? :D
