I have recently bought a 60 panel bus with no engine, tranny,or rear spring plates.I'm looking at options that include:
1. Using a 66 big lug tranny with stock bus components.
2. A swing axle tranny w/o reduction boxes.
3.I also have access to a porche 924 parts car for possible use of trailing arms and disk brakes.I would rather avoid IRS.
I'll be running a 1641, and no heavy hauling, but I would like to have good highway speeds! |

Hey, If I were you, I'd roll with a big nut tranny, with a Freeway Flyer, No lie, they rule! The problem with the bus is the gearing...if you like driving on the highway, and don't wanna kill your engine, then go with the flyer, if you're just pimpen it easy, then stock is ok. I would stay away from the Swing Axle, that's a lot of modifications to the bus. If you'd like to check out how to change from a stock to a freeway flyer, then check my webpage.

Go with the stock set up, just get a freeway flyer. A 1641 isn't going to push you much more than a 1600. If you are going to have a motor built I would avoid a 1641. Go for a 1600, 1679 (machine in 88mm p/c's)or a 1776. Any slip in cylinder will run hotter.
A Bug and Bus tranny are the same up till '67. The only difference being that a bus has reduction boxes and the r/p is flipped. I think the previous post was refering to a "straight" axle kit and not a swing axle.
If going real fast is an issue, you would be better of rebuilding the Porsche, as a bus will never get up and go all that well! |
