Hi im after some advice ive got an oil leak on my van ,Its got a 1600 tp engine and ive narrowed it down to the crankshaft pulley oil seal. Can I change this seal without splittin the case and what is the best way to remove the pulley. Cheers

You mean the flywheel seal I guess ? (on the other side of the engine then the pulley you describe). Where is the oil coming from ? Can you see it coming out somewhere ?

I mean the seal which is behind the pulley where the belt fits to go to the alternator, Its blows oil out at motorway speeds(high revs). I have all ready replaced the the fly wheel seal!

Have you changed the pulley? There is not a seal installed there unless someone has installed a sand seal.

The pulley has a spiral grove that keeps oil going back into the case if there is not too much case pressure from worn rings, etc. I have noticed that a few after aftermarket pulleys don't have the correct depth groove and at higher rpms it won't keep the oil in the engine.

If it is the original pulley I would look at case pressure problem.

Yep, I agree with busdad !
That is why I guessed you were talking about the other seal. Removal of the pulley and installing another is pretty easy, so it is worth a try ! Good luck.

put a bugpack sand seal pully in it and the prob. will go away. use form a gasket on the outer part of the sand seal if the case has some ware.it will work the same as a wheel seal rother then a oil slinger

Ive not touched the pulley, but will try a sand pulley. Ive just freshened up the top end with new rings and reground valves and have good compression but I suspect that the crank case is over pressurising some how any suggestions? I was wondering if i was just pushing it too hard on the motorway, its a 64 Kombi with IRS and a type three gear box.
It seems to be happy at 70 MPH all day apart from the oil leak Cheers.

Is the crankcase breather tube clogged up? That could let it build up pressure.

All pipes and breathers are clean and no kinks visible
