what do i have to do to put empi fives on my 63 bus

Amsterdam_VW Sun Mar 23, 2003 1:28 pm

1: Buy them
2: put some tires on them
3: Unbolt your old wide-5's
4: Bolt on the Empi's
5: Sit back and watch your new wheelcombo !

Really....it is that simple, the empi 5 will fit straight on, but you may have to use other bolts instead of the old ones.
Ofcourse it is possible that your car has a conversion of some sort, like a type 1 tranny with 4-lug drums, or drilled for another pattern. In that case there is more involved (like adapters).
Peace

dont you have to grind some material off the inside of the rim so your dust caps fit? and what about the rears on a big nut tranny?

bugheadred@hotmail.com Sun Mar 23, 2003 7:53 pm

amsterdam do you have them on your bus i thought that eric has it right that i would have to modify my drums or the wheels and if this is true what has to be done to make them fit does someone have pics please

Amsterdam_VW Mon Mar 24, 2003 12:04 am

I heard that the American Eagle wheels sometimes need a little material grinding.
Yes, you can machine down the snout of the drum to make the dustcap fit, but I think there are dustcaps out there (larger/deeper) so that it isn't nessecary.
They do the snout like http://www.23window.com/irs_drumspecs.asp
when needed. Most of the times it is really a bolt on. Really !
Erik G, if material is grinded from INside the rim, the problem of fitting the dustcaps will be bigger, cause the drum will 'stick more through' the rim...

that is just to change irs to 5 stud

Amsterdam_VW Tue Mar 25, 2003 4:53 am

Yes....but it shows the snout machining what I was talking about. I didn't say IRS anywhere.....

Amsterdam, If the drum sticks out more after grinding on thewheel doesn't that indicate that the wheel wasn't flush with the drum? I do not understand your dustcap explanation.

Amsterdam_VW Tue Mar 25, 2003 8:17 am

Well, if you take of material of the wheel, then the snout of the drum will stick even more through the rim, right ? So the dustcap will not fit then, if it didn't before the grinding of the rim....

66split Tue Mar 25, 2003 8:54 am

i put them on my bus no prob..you do need the longer dust caps for the wheel though. the back ones stick out a ways..

Amsterdam_VW Tue Mar 25, 2003 12:17 pm

see ? :-)

Erik G Tue Mar 25, 2003 12:44 pm

I wasn't sure, you do have to do it for an early bug, and I would have thought the bus would have even more issues. and are you sure they will fit on a big nut tranny without any problems?

Erik G Tue Mar 25, 2003 12:48 pm

and like timgud said, isn't that a mute point if the wheel is up against the drum? It isnt going any further than all the way on right? so clearencing the rim is an option if they dont bolt up

Amsterdam_VW Tue Mar 25, 2003 1:16 pm

Maybe I am missing the point Erik G ... you mean like when the rim doesn't fit around the drum ? (drum bigger than opening in rim) Or ON the drum (where the bolts are) ?

Erik G Tue Mar 25, 2003 2:07 pm

the places I marked with red is where you have to clearence them on a bug.

Erik G Tue Mar 25, 2003 2:08 pm

and those are og's, not what we are talking about

bugheadred@hotmail.com Tue Mar 25, 2003 2:28 pm

what about the front. 66 split where did you get the caps and do you have 46 or 36 mm nuts on the back i have 36 or 46 boxes i can put on i have to take the tranny out it leaks and it has 36 now

rizzag Tue Mar 25, 2003 2:36 pm

in the front 63 and down are going to be an issue since they are larger and stick out further in the dustcap area than the 64 to 67 which will bolt right on with no clearance problems.

crofty Tue Mar 25, 2003 5:02 pm

I ran those before on my '65, used the stock center caps from American Racing and did not have to nachine anything.
