| Is a stock VW motor really reliable? I have heard that they are the best, but my truck seems better...Let's compare... Say compare a stock 1650 to a Toyota truck 22R motor. Which is more reliable as far as maintenance, tune ups, etc... |

IMHO the stock VW engine is more reliable than the engines/drivetrains installed in comparable year cars. I don't know what year the 22R you are talking about is from, but early Toyata engines (pre-1985) were not particularly long lasting. (I have owned 6 Toyotas 3 of them new, the last was a 1988).
Now, compared to the average small car produced today in Japan, the VW engine is less reliable.
Aircooled VW engines will usually get around 100K miles before major overhaul, and current Japanese small displacement engines (which I consider the most reliable for the price) will go 160K miles easily as long as you change the timing belt at 100K miles.
This is just my experience.
Now, the real issue is that the VW engine is so easy and cheap to rebuild, that you can do it yourself, or get someone to do it for you for very reasonable cost. This is how the aircooled VW blows the competition out of the water.

| ad an oil filter and don't build a big engine and it will last 100000 to 200000 miles if you keep up with the maintanence and don't beat on the car |
