Hi
My 181 started making a new noise after tonights drive in the snow. The noise is sort of a low rumbling while the car is moving with the clutch depressed. Any ideas?

Study the nosie a little better. Your request is very vauge without much description.
Could be any one or combination of the following:
Throw Out Bearing
Main Shaft Bearings
Pinion Shaft Bearings
Individual gear bearing
differential carrier bearing
Wheel Bearing
While you are coasting with the clutch pushed in, rev the engine and see if the pitch changes. Coast with the trans in neautral, release the clutch and let the engine idle and rev it to see if that changes the pitch. Coast and push the clutch in and turn the engine off to see if the noise changes. Coast with the engine off, trans in neautral and the clutch released. Study each gear under slight load and drag, then coast in each gear with the clutch pushed in.
Use everything you can think of to test each bearing/combination to isolate the noise. |

Hello
It has been a while since I have been out with the 181. I
Thanks for the suggestions on the previous post.
The noise appears only while the I press the clutch. What does that mean?
On the drive I had i had another issue. It is very difficult to put the car in gear. It seems that it is locked and cannot go into gear. After a bit or stirring the lever around I can slot it in 3rd or 4th and the it goes into any gear with no trouble. Also when the gears get locked up, and i try to put it gear the car starts moving sort of like when you let the clutch out but in this instance the clutch is to the floor. Any ideas on this?
On top of all this I have some knocking sound from the rear of the car when the transmission is under load. The cv are almost bran new with less that 1000km on them. The sound comes and goes pretty random but it is comes more often when the car is going up a hill or turning. I have a suspision that the diff is eating itself....
Thanks for any tips.

These sounds appear to me to be more maintenance issues than deep rooted problems.
The shifter problem you speak of could very well be a combination of the shift rod bushing under and just rearward of the shifter and the shift rod coupling under the tunnel access hole at the rear of the inside top of the tunnel.
The clutch depressed noise may be just a worn throw out bearing and not adjusted properly.
While the engine is out to replace the throw out bearing, check the boden tube for proper droop and inspect the guide that the throw out bearing rides on for wear.
Take care of the maintenance issues first, before assuming the transmission is going bad. Change the gear oil in the tranny and look for chunks of metal. The gear sets usually go bad before the differential goes bad. |
