Last Fall (September), I trailered my first car (72' Super) from Salt Lake City to Omaha over the weekend, and have slowly started on this project!
I bought the car in 2000 outside Portland, OR, and have really done nothing with the car since that time.
Any insight you can provide during my resto process will be greatly appreciated, as this will be my first off-body resto (planning a German looker on a budget - Oxymoron maybe?).
Here are some pictures of the progress so far (I apologize for the quality in advance):
New Floorpans!
The end goal:
I will definitely be asking a lot of questions and looking for a lot of advice as i go through this build. This is the first restoration of this magnitude I have completed (although I have completed a '74 Super and '64 Chevy C-10 with help from those with more experience than myself). |

I like it... you should take a look at this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3...;start=160
His end result is similar to your goal.
Love Anthracite Gray... is that what you're going for? |

| Yes! I have read that build thread a few times, and love the result he came out with. Now if only i had unlimited time and money, i could have the thing done soon, but I'll have to settle with waiting and being patient i guess :D |

I have gotten a little more work done recently, so here is an update:
painted and cleaned up Transmission:
Cleaned up and repainted rear chasis fork:
Also, I have received some rebuilt NOS German axles and cv joints, as well as degreased and reinstalled the rear axle hubs.
Next up will be remove the rear control arms and clean those up, along with putting the whole rear-end back together. |

Haven't updated in a while. Recently, I have reinstalled the transmission (complete with new mounts, shift rod bushing, and shift coupler bushings), purchased NOS axles and CV joints (need to grease up and install), installed a new master cylinder and bleed the brakes, and started cleaning and treating the gas tank (surface rust inside, and a few small pinholes by where the sending unit screws in).
This weekend, looking forward to reinstalling the engine and getting this thing running for the first time in a few years!
If anyone has any good advice on restoring a slightly rusty gas tank, i'd love to hear it! |

I now have the motor and tranny installed, CV joints greased and installed, and.... the motor now runs and i have driven the car around the block a few times!
I am having some tuning issues and the car is running like crap!
Going to rewire the car this week, and be in a cruise this weekend, given i get the tuning done.
Until next time! |

Got the title switched over to a an NE title from OR, and got the car registered! The car was even able to drive the ~30 blocks each way!
It was a slow rough ride tho, which means i still don't have the tuning in check.
I do now have headlights and taillights as another plus. |

19super73 - It's a blast having it back on the road! Still plenty of things to go on it, but just to drive it this weekend was amazing!
Enjoyed making a test run on Sunday, in the OVWC Spring Cruise. Headlights and taillights worked, wipers worked, and engine purred like a kitten!
Here is a photo of my car parked along side some other nice cars from my club:

Update: Going to attempt to completely re-wire the car with a WiringWorks kit this weekend. Anyone have any insight on this? I have read a number of the threads on here about it, and I think I have a good handle on it.
My remote starter (a nice snap-on one) got wet a few weeks back and is fried :(. Time to just do the wiring right and get this thing done. |

Car is now rewired with a Wiring Works kit. Just need to replace the old relays and headlight/Emergency switches and we are good to go!
Surprisingly easy kit to install. Now just gotta finalize all the connections and loom the wiring behind the dash/above the tank.
Pics to come once it's all loomed up and pretty! |

I haven't posted on here in a while, and i am due for an update. I am about to begin the long journey of removing the body, and cleaning up the body and chassis. ANY pointers or forethought is gladly welcomed (it's my first time removing the body from a bug, as well as going about body work-PLEASE HELP! :? )
Here is the latest:
The last time the body and chassis will be together for a while:
All the body bolts out (only broke 2! Thanks PB Blaster!):

Fenders, running boards, hood and decklid & upper rear shock bolts all removed. Tomorrow night - it'll be glass, gas tank and disconnecting the master cylinder reservoir. What's next, gotta get some buddies and lift that old body off that chassis!

The body has been lifted! Now I am just in the process of removing a few engine items, the strut towers so i can roll the chassis out from under the body tonight.

The body is now officially off the chassis and up on the stand. Not bad for an hour of work, 1 large pizza and a 6-pack of cheap beer!
I apologize in advance for the crappy cell phone pictures...
