I've come across a 1600 dual port beetle engine for a good price. What do I do to put it in my 1965 Kombi

Where are you in Ontario?

Is your bus still 6 volt or has it been swithched to 12v? I assume the beetle engine is 12volt.
Do you still have the original trans setup in the kombi?

it will fit.....just like 70 said ...gotta make sure if its 12 or 6 volts

I'm in Windsor. It's still 6 volt I'm going to change it over. As far as I know the trans is original. My first stab at these beasts so I'm trying not to make costly mistakes. RICK

The 12v flywheel will not fit inside the 65 bellhousing unless you relieve the opening.
Also, make sure the pressure plate has the ring on it where the throwout bearing meets it.

By relieving I assume you mean grinding. I will have to buy a new clutch, pressure plate , throwout bearing etc.

Are there any changes required as far as mounting locations are concerned?

Nope, it bolts right up.

Yes, relieving = grinding the bellhousing to fit the larger 12v flywheel.
You will also need to change the starter bushing in the bellhousing. The 12v stater uses a smaller diameter shaft. They make a special bushing to fit the 6v hole in the bellhousing to use a 12v starter.
Your original clutch should have been a 180mm size.
The new one will be 200mm. These came in 2 different styles [I am talking about the diaphragm model, not the 9 spring] 67 bus to 70 used one with a ring on the fingers to center the throwout bearing. 71 and up did not because the trans has a tube for the bearing to ride on. Make sure you get the one with the ring!

Also forgot to mention. More than likely, the DP bug engine will have the doghouse oil cooler set-up. This means the left upper engine bolt goes in from the trans side and the case has a pressed in nut. Your 65 used a D bolt that locked into the bellhousing and you tightened the nut from the engine side. Do NOT try to a hex head bolt and the pressed in nut! You will lock the head of the bolt in to the notch in the bellhousing and curse forever afterwards.
Take your original short D bolt to a good parts/hardware store and get a matching Allen head bolt to replace it.
Your original 6v starter used a hex head upper bolt. The 12v starter uses a longer D bolt. Make sure you get one!

Thanks for all the advice guys.

hey, If you dont wanna mess with the starter bushing, you can always use an autostock starter. It is self supprting and needs no bushing, The Auto Stick starter is much cheaper (at least at Kragen/Chucks/Checkers)

Sounds like they took care of the question for you. Anyway, I will be looking out for 65 kombi this summer, I don't see enough splits around here on Ontario!
