So I just finished adjusting my valves and I'm in the process of installing a new exhaust system when I look over and see this... crap. To top it off about ten minutes later I broke off one of the bolts that holds the left J tube on. Before you ask yes its the top one. I'm going to pick up a bolt remover tomorrow but I have no idea how to even get my drill up there!?

And with that I'm going to bed.

Don't let the small stuff get you down. You've tackled bigger problems.

Any clue about the brake issue? Blown wheel cylinder? leaky bleed valve?

DougD Sat Jan 28, 2012 11:47 pm

Dunno. I haven't even touched that wheel since I bought the rig. Guess I'll find out tomorrow...

Just drop the engine. It takes what? 20 minutes?

DougD Sun Jan 29, 2012 7:41 am

Ha! Maybe 20min for you.

That looks to me to be a bad cylinder. Might as well do all 4 as they are cheap and easy to install. Now that exhaust bolt is another story  .

no problem with a angle drill just center punch first small drill bit then the larger bit take it slow remember it is easy to drill a stud it is almost impossible to drill out a broken drill bit or remove the engine a 20 min job

DougD Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:33 pm

Checked into pricing on the brake system and it is pretty in-expensive so thats good.

On the bolt: I Have the tools to remove it but after doing some reading it sounds like the suggestion to remove the engine is a good one. Is it really that easy? I'd hate to have to guilt any of you Washingtonians into coming over and helping me put it back in...

do all four wheel cylinders...its time. drop the engine unless you got mad skills...stud extraction should be a piece of cake with it out. taking time to smell the roses, this is a weekend job. flexing a bit of testosterone, your'e done before lunch.

So what do people do with the old exhausts? Just toss them? I assume nobody wants stuff like this?

joescoolcustoms Mon Jan 30, 2012 8:05 am

Being a non-stock guy myself, those exhaust pieces look to me to be post consumer recyclables.

Rev. Scott Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:38 pm

post 'em in the classifieds (type one)...somebody wants them. not sure who, but somebody.

Semper_Dad Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:56 pm

Save them for the for swapmeet at SpringMeet or Vintage Meet. If you can't sell them there, you can give them away.

So I replaced the rear cylinders and got it all back together but the stupid thing wont bleed. I pumped on my not-so mityvac for 45 minutes in countless configurations and all I get is air, more air then maybe a little brake fluid. Ideas?

Brake reservoir full right?
Thought I'd hit the easy answers first.

BTW, where did you pick up your cylinders? German or Brazilian?

DougD Wed Feb 01, 2012 12:38 pm

Yep its full. Not sure were they were made... I was going to order the nice ones online but I need to get back on the road so my other car can get into the shop. I ended up just picking them up at the local parts store.

Semper_Dad Wed Feb 01, 2012 6:06 pm

So is your bleed setup pushing or pulling?

What I have done in the past is clamp off the soft hose before replacing the wheel cylinders. Less air to get sucked back into the loop.

DougD Wed Feb 01, 2012 6:33 pm

Pulling. I filled the bleed container up twice at the back wheel but air was coming in 90% of the time.

Instead of using the vac pump to pull the fluid (and maybe air around the bleeder valve), get a helper to do the old tried and true pump, open and shut the bleeder, repeat method.

Guess I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the bleeding setup with the mityvac. Never used one. I've always used the coke bottle and hose method. Generally requires two people
