This may well be the most difficult restoration ever.
Condition of car + my dumb ass = mind.blown.
Wish me luck & prepare for many questions to come.
Thanks to fellow Samba member vwadam (seller) for the chance to bring this one back to life.

Yet another North AL Squareback! We are starting to make a bit of a showing on here.
D&B VW on your side of Athens has a couple early fastback parts cars. Aside from the rear hatch area, everything on them will work on your square.
Spook has a couple at AiKooled Kustoms as well. |

Glad you made it home safely with it!
She needs a ton of work but has potential for sure. There's some good qualities, you just need a good parts car(s)
I'm glad it's not rusting away in my backyard anymore. |

1. Don't throw anything away
2. German Chrome polishes very nice
3. Dip all rubber parts in Glycerin and they will become soft and pliable again.
4. Good Luck with the Resto always nice to see another squareback being brought back! |

5. Don't listen to anything sharky suggest you do. And if you do, go through his picture gallery.
Fixted it for you. |

Sharky has given you your best/first advice!
Sand/wire wheel the hood down to bare metal in the rusty areas.
Treat the rusty/bare metal with Rust-Prep or similar phosphoric acid.
Weld in patches now or later.
Body filler now or later.
Rattle can primer the whole hood in red oxide or the color of your choice.
Do a fender next and work your way around the car 1 fender/door at a time.
It will take a good month, but 'what the hay'! |

| that "looks" like the kind of car that would make spoiled southern californians run away... (i used to be one) but after what I've seen bob do....(look at his crusty notch threads) anything is possible... take your time and you'll get there! have you bought a pallet of welding wire yet? |

Thanks guys. I was rather lost as to where to start.
Also, I've seen about 10 different vids on how to remove a bug body from the pan. Do you know of any for a squareback? I can't find any. |

Don't pull the body off the pan. Just cut out the 2-1/2 pans with a sawzall/grinder. You can then weld in used heater channels/patch yours with the body sitting solid! Guaranteed to fit.
The 3 Ton floor jack from Harbor Freight with the threaded on jack pad & 2 jack stands are good for engine pulls etc. |

Thanks Mike. Very happy to see that you are living up to your reputation. ;)
Edit: That sounds weird. How about: "Very happy to see that your helpfulness & expertise that I've read about is turning out to be true." |

| I notice that there are several North Alabama people in here. Should our work schedules jive & you need an extra pair of hands one day, I'd be happy to be those hands & learn while I go. I'm in Florence, about an hour from Huntsville. |

| I picked up the same kit from HF and have had no complaints. It is more than enough for the "average Joe". |
