I looked at this bus last weekend and went back and forth on going back to get it. In 1982 it donated it's running gear for a wicked dunebuggy that could do sweet jumps.
The property it was on was changing hands and the owner wanted to milk a little more cash out of what was still there.
I spent friday night welding up a dolly to haul it out of the woods out of 4x4 stock and a 1/8 90 Angle. This thing was awesome until we had the chains under it when it was right on the trailer. It then curled under the weight of the Bus being lifted in the air. At any rate it served it's purpose. From arrival to exit we were there 40 minutes.
I took it to my Dads house as he has 6 acres way off the road and I am certain my home owners association would ticket me for this thing.
Fair warning it is rough and I am not sure if I am going to bring it back or part it out. The Frame is actually solid, It set on some jack stands but the front tires were about halfway in the ground.

Tool kit for the pull.We had a heavy duty jack along with the Mickey Mouse one in the photo.

Arrival. we had to pull it out and to the right to get it on the trailer. Passenger wheel is locked but we still got it on the trailer.

Cabinets are in much better shape than the outside. Wasp love them.

Will have to get some thicker Angle. Still did great even when it turned to wheelie bar style.

Looks like it's worth saving to me if there's not a whole lot of other rust.

Those two black metal rods in the front are the childs cot poles. there should be a trapezoidal piece of heavy greenish canvas that goes between them. It is probably rotted/ missing.
The poles are valuable/hard to find/ useful. You can get a new canvas easier than the poles.

There is the standard rust along with the shot out A pillars.
Yeah the Cot poles were in it and right under them was the cot. In that pic of the floor you can see what is left of it under the Pole. It is rotted and was used as insulation by some mice.

Here is another westy with black steering column but with white steering wheel!

I posted about it after noticing few so42 out there includes mine have the same thing. I have asked this before, but nobody seem to know.

Now I am more and more sure that all late So42 got black column and white steering wheel??

Thanks for the encouragement. I am somewhat leaning on the community on value to save it or not. The A pillars are rough. The bus set since 82 with all the water running from the back to the front.
My thought on repairing that is to just cut the nose off and replace with another complete nose. Otherwise it will be parted out. The nose skin is ok until you get to the headlight buckets.
It has the usual floor rust and rocker rust. On the drivers side rocker , the rust is only about 2 foot from the B pillar after that it is amazingly solid. Short rocker on the passenger side has no rust that I can see. The cargo rocker is gone but I have done one of those already and am aware the labor involved.

Thanks for the heads up on it as well.
Those are actually flat head srews but still about 50 too many holes to fill. I was originally hoping to grab the nose skin off this one for the deluxe but the deluxe one is better than this one by far.

Don't cut this bus up.

If you're sure you're not up for the work, turn the bus over to a mechanic who is. Yeah, it's got bad rot in a few places and will need quite a bit of metal, but a talented welder -of which there are an increasing number here- can make that bus whole again in a few months -and save that nose that's straight as an arrow.

The sale of this very sought-after Westy will yield you a fat chunk of change toward the repairs on the other bus you have.

Vultures: go circle something that's dead, this bus has got plans.

Don't cut it up.

Are you sure the colums weren't replaced at some point? I doubt very highly that they ever came with black columns and white wheels unless you live in the Sacramento metropolitian area.

My late '66 Westy has a black column and white wheel.

(Because I replaced the original white steering box and didn't paint it)

I am up for the work, just was not as optimistic on being able to save the nose. I will get some more pics, but the PO put Styrofoam between the kick panels and the metal and it accelerated the rust. I also think the entire A pillar on both sides will need to be redone. I am shopping for repair metal now. I have to finish up the Deluxe and then I can put some good time into this one.

I have gotten plenty of PM's for parts and especially the cot poles so for now I am keeping it all together. I also was not using this post to sell anything as I hate reading where someone posts "ohh look what I found, what is it worth" and then two days later list it in the classifieds.
