View original topic: Partitioning Mac OS X with Windows 7

I'm trying to split my hard drive and install Windows 7 so I can run some old PC games and MS Word. Unfortunately I keep running into error messages. I have had this hard drive partitioned before and it ran flawlessly but I ran out of internal space so I deleted it  . Now I have a 2TB external hard drive for iTunes, iPhoto, movies etc so internal space isn't a concern anymore. I would just reinstall the old version of Windows I have but Apple pulled a fast one and when I updated to Lion the partition requirements got bumped up to Windows 7 only.

Before I ran anything I preformed a Time Machine back up also. About my Mac:

Mac OS X 10.7.2
Aluminum unibody, Late 2008 Model
2 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
2 GB 1067 MHz DDRE Memory
89.53 Gigs FREE space of 159 Gigs total

I'm following the steps in Boot Camp and using a LEGAL copy of Windows 7 but keep getting this error message:

I went into Disk Utilities and it already says it's formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Volume":

I pressed the "+" sign underneath the blue outlined box, selected 30 Gigs as the new Partition size tried "Windows NT Filesystem (NTSF-3G), "Windows NT Filesystem (Tuxera NTSF)" and "MS-DOS (FAT)" for partition formats and after all the attempts I got this error message:

I'm honestly stumped. I know my way around computers but I'm by no means a computer wiz. Am I doing something obviously wrong?

Yeah, that's beyond me. I'd recommend going to the Apple support forums and asking your question there.

Yeah I actually ended up going to Apple and having them look at it. Turns out I still had the imprint of the old partition burried on my Hard Drive and Boot Camp was seeing that impression and causing the error messages. They had to erase and restore my entire Hard Drive and once I got home I tried partitioning it again and it worked great! I had to install a few drivers for Windows but besides that it's been fine. I'm actually on the Windows side right now waiting for a some updates to finish. Hmmm.... 105 Updates. Time for more coffee.

Did you know Steve Jobs drove a VW bus? He actually sold it to help finance the Apple I, when they were still working in the garage.

Later, when he was working on the initial Macintosh, he wanted the design to "be like a VW beetle", simple and classic that would last over time.

His dad was a car guy and made some extra money buying old cars and fixing them up and they'd talk about car designs and styling.

(I'm reading his biography, that's as far as I've gotten so far).

I knew he had a bus and sold it to finalnce the Apple 1 but I didn't know he designed it around the Beetle. Makes sence. What biography are you reading?

Well, he didn't model it like a Beetle, just held up the bug as an example of a successful design when they were working on the first Mac.

This is the 'authorized' biography that came out last fall. It's pretty good, definitely readable so it goes quickly despite being a big book (by my standards).
