Did any of you catch the Kiro7 news tonight? thy did one of there investigative reports,, and According to them VW's are not classic cars! only 1950's and 60's American muscle cars and only 100% restored cars can have collector plates. If you have collector plates on your unrested car your A crock riping off the government!!
The news people cornered A lady in A 1973 bug, and told her in A roundabout way that her car was A piece of shit and had no business having collector plates. Then thy had some clown with A privet car collection Worth over $1,000,000,000 bucks, cars like 1957 Chevy nomad, 68 corvette, ext. the guy was saying that collector plats were intended for guys like him("Rich" Im assuming that's what he meant??). then the reporter was saying that collector car plates are for beautifully restored 50's & 60's American muscle cars.. The lady in the bug held her own, and told him its over 30years old and it fits the states qualifications for A classic car..
I was trying to git A link to post,, but thy dont have any info for it on there site maby its just to new? it showed on the 6pm news on KIRO-7 news here in WA.
The worst part is thy were calling out the cops for not righting tickets to people for having the plates that dont "Deserve" them So I have A filling all the guys with VW's are going to start getting harassed now for no reason!!

I think they were more concerned with the fact the old lady was driving the car more than it is supposed to be. The classic plates are intended for cars driven for parades or shows, not daily drivers. Inadequate them on my last Bus. I was told I wasn't allowed to use the bus to haul items.

"Vehicle requirements
To use collector plates, vehicles must be:
More than 30 years old.
Capable of operating on the highway.
Owned and operated as collector vehicles.

Collector vehicles may be driven:
To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique car club meetings.
For testing purposes.
For the pleasure of others without compensation.
Collector vehicles may not be used for:

Commercial purposes or to carry a load.
Regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle."

Seems pretty straightforward. Plates not meant for a daily driver.

I git what your saying, :D really I do!
But there is no mileage limitation on collector plates, and the law states parades, shows, club events, and pleasure driving. Every time I git into my bug it brings me pleasure :D But any way from what I seen and herd well watching, it seemed like more of A attack on "low cost" cars with collector plates. The news reporter said the only cars that collector plats are for is "beautifully restored 1950's & 60's "American" classic and muscle cars"

Who gives a fuck what some pole smoking reporter from the west side thinks?
I didn't ask his opinion when I purchased one for my VW.

No shit. Don't let a slow news day get under your skin. I plan on getting them for mine to avoid smog.

This has recently become an issue in Maryland as well.

In the past the car had to be 25 years old to get historic plates.

Then they started the dynomometer emmissions testing. (Took my Jeep for that and I was horrified to see what they did with it!)

The state began getting a lot of complaints because cars were being damaged during the test. Mostly older cars.

So I believe because of that they relaxed the standards for historic plates and shortened the requirment to 20 years from 25.

Now they have discontinued the dynomometer emmissions test and have gone back to either the OBD plug in or the tail pipe sniffer test.

So there is now legislation in the works to go back to the 25 year old requirment for historic cars.

We do see lots of older cars in our area being driven on a regular basis with historic plates, so a lot of people used this to bypass the emmissions test.

ALL my private vehicles have historic plates, but I spend most of my time driving my company vehicles.

We can use the historic plates for club events and public interest events.

So I formed my own club. I'm the only member. But everytime I drive my cars it's a club event!

AND it in the public interest that I drive to work. Otherwise I have to stay home and collect unemployment and thats not good for the public!

But the real kicker that they are trying to push through here is they want to force these cars to have a historic or antique car insurance policy. That really limits what you can use the car for, what shape its in, and where it is stored.

The biggest issue is if you use it for non-collector purposes, the insurance company will not have to pay out in the event of a claim.

OK Hank, that pissed me off too. Now I'm going to get collector plates for my POS just to piss them off. Someone needs to posts the address to the station so we know where to send our pics of our collector cars.

I think Ratt has right. The issue is not whether or not VWs are classic cars but rather the misuse of the collector plate program. I've seen plenty of American cars in various states of restoration on the road.

My car sports collector plates and I admit to pushing the envelope from time to time. It's not my daily driver. I have no qualms about using it to drive to my city center for a Sunday breakfast or to the minimart.

I have a 2000 Passat wagon for my "daily driver". However, since I'm more or less "semi-retired", over the last year I put more miles on my Thing than the wagon. I drive the Thing every chance I get for my pleasure and for the pleasure of folks that wave to me as I pass by.

I try and be faithful to the spirit of the law. I wouldn't drive my Thing to work or school unless it was registered as such. My car is certainly not registered as a collector car to avoid paying yearly tabs. The amount for a yearly tab is insignificant when factored in the total cost of yearly maintenance and upkeep. We don't have smog testing in Kitsap so that also not an issue for me.

The point the news crew in the clip pushes is condition is a requirement to being a classic car. No where in the law is condition brought up. The law fails to mention that driving in the rain could get you harassed by a news crew.

I agree 100%. I am always amazed by people trying to get away with things. It's all fun and games until something happens, and those few dollars saved are going to cost dearly. If it's a daily driver then man up and pay the price. When I decided to use my car as a collector type, then I changed my registration/insurance status.

I did get a good chuckle when I went to the DMV here in Wa. to change the plates to collector car status. My normal plates still had 6 months until they expired and the clerk was trying to convince me I was wasting my money and was losing 6 months of useable registration by changing over. I tried to explain that once I registered it as a collector car, I would never have to purchase tags again, so it didn't matter if I did it then or waited up to 6 months. She wouldn't see that way and thought I was still wasting money. ](*,)

If not driving in the rain was A requirement, you would very rarely see any classic car here in the PNW.. some times you just got to drive in the rain around hear

I daily drive my bus all summer long to work and take a few trips. I think we deserve the plates because everywhere I go it's an event and the public benefits. I can't tell you how many times I come out of the grocery store to find a family or group of kids asking to take pictures with it....or just to look it over. I even had a post it attached to it saying "having a bad day, saw the bus-thanks for the smile" I think thats why the program exist.

gt1953 Tue Feb 07, 2012 7:25 am

The answer is send them a annual renewal fee cause the state is acutally loosing money and another source of revenue. The fee could be small then it would not matter on condition of car.
Here in AZ I have YOM (year of manufacture) plates on mine and the state considers it a "special" plate. I pay a few dollars more. Oh it gets better on my one car they are personalized YOM plate and I get dinged twice. YOM and personalized.
It must have been a slow news day and did the guy drive his aircooled car to mini mart gas station and by a soda?
