Hello! I tried searching, but apparently Im doing it wrong..

My speedo cable snapped at the wheel last year and I need to replace it.. people are telling me the Beetle one will work.. is this correct?

I am using a 68 speedo out of a beetle too..

any issues with using a beetle one from 67-74?

Ive seen people discussing the lubing of said speedo cable.. what type of lube and how.. thanks for your help!

cmon spring!

Start Googling P/N 111957801. Original P/N for Thing is 111957801H.

Not sure what if any modifications are needed if using a Beetle Speedo. I suspect the only difference is the calibration of the speedo itself so an original cable should hook up.

I think older cables had provisions for a cotter pin on the wheel hub, newer cables use a circlip

Beetle speedos will swap in with no issues, ASIDE from the calibration. A beetle cable will work as well, but they are a couple inches shorter and thus will not mount in all the retainer clips in the wheelwell and in inside above the pedal assembly.(Personal experience, I have a later model beetle speedo/cable in Our Thing. been that way for 20+ years.)
I'll swap the cable someday, just to tidy the attachment up.
I am running 205 series tires on 15" wheels on Our Thing and the indicated speed is spot on(verified by GPS) for the Bug speedo.
Obviously rolling diameter of tires will dictate indicated speed, relative to actual. The closer you get to the factory diameter of the vehicle from which you got the speedo, the more accurate you'll be!

The cable from an early beetle before balljoints is longer than the later cars. The reason the later balljoint cable is shorter is because the spindles on beetles are lower than things, things higher, longer cable. Speedo from a beetle will work because it is the same. It has a beetle part number.

By the microfishe there is only one cable for left hand drive Part # 111 957 801 H. This measures 50 1/4 long as the beetle for ball joint cars are 47 1/2 long. The speedo also has one part # for a miles instead of KM. Part # 113 957 057 H. You will find a # 113 957 023 M stamped on the speedo housing, I think this # is for the housing and not a complete unit
