My Bus did this when it overheated in California. Not good for the motor!

That is a great chart.

There's lots of things that can fail when warm like coils, points, condensers, rotors, wires and plugs in the ignition system and pumps and float levels in the carb. Don't rule out tight valves or bad compression either and there's always the possibility of something floating around in the fuel tank intermittantly blocking the outlet, or a bad ignition switch.

There, does that narrow it down enough? :P

Also great advice. I have a newer electronic ignition, new spark plugs, new wires, one year old pertronix flame thrower coil, new ignition switch , and all ground ,starter, battery wires have been taken off and cleaned .Could be valves but I just set them about 20 miles ago. Could be a tank floaty, How about my fuel pump ground theory? Would love for it to happen again and this time don’t just start wiggling wires until it starts. :?

I think you were on the right track I thought it could only happen in cold places, I was wrong  so much to learn thanks to the Samba.

Could be carb ice, or, a blocked fuel vent line from the fuel tank.

Small updates
Starts every time but had a chance to take out on an open road. Two things are now present
1 fuel pump ticking, just like the one I replaced 3 months ago
2 loss of power at higher rpm, like it is trying to go faster but cant

It does feel like fuel starvation ????
any thoughts.

Thanks Gerry

Sure sounds like a plugged up tank.

im having that same loss of power....my next trick will be replacing my filter to see if that finally fixes it....if not....yee haw. :(

Started at the filter at the carb and found this. After test drive freeway speeds are now achievable…..

It almost looks like a twine fiber what the heck .

Those fuel pumps are junk. Ive used them at work on a spray pump engine. Went through two before we switched over to a facet.

it was the pump. it was doing the same thing the next day, put a new pump on still under warranty. runs fine... How does a 3 month old pump fail?

Thanks gerry

Gonna jump in on the condensor issue...... twice in my life I've worked on something totally unrelated, went to start engine and it ran like crap. Of course you always suspect the freaking thing you just screwed with.......... not always the case!

Both times were bad condensors that just decided to go bad. Last time was when I adjusted valves. Thought i screwed something up..... it took days to troubleshoot, only to find the bad condensor was the culprit all along.

Im sure there are test you can do to check them (microfarads as I recall from training long ago), but when goofey things happen for no obvious reason, just change a 5 dollar condensor right off the bat, and then work backward,,,,IMHO

Of course another time was on a FI Honda. Put new Bosch plug wires on, did tune up, ran like crap. Troupleshot and mistakenly flooded a cylinder. Broke a connecting rod (douh), changed engine with known good, put same new plug wires on it. Ran like crap still, put nasty old wires and distributer on new engine, fired right up and ran great. Found one bad (new) wire. Wrote to Bosch, and they paid for the new engine

Moral of this story is,,,,,,,,,new stuff ca be bad tooo! As my beard gets grayer, I realize these things now
