ok.. so everytime I fill up my gas tank I smell gas.... WTF!... I don't see any wet spots on or under my tank...

any thoughts?... I'm thinking the gas cap might be leaking fumes or something...

You can see my car in this video(not the gas tank... just the car):

I'll take a video of the gas tank if it helps...

Check gas cap seal. Sending unit seal. Fuel line inside the tunnel.

Do you fill it ALL the way up?
How long does the smell last?

Not abnormal to smell gas fumes that get trapped under the hood after refueling and pushed through the dash for a short time.

If the gas cap seal is shot then enough gas can leak and cause odor when the tank is full. Some bugs have a metal tube attached to the tank's neck that connects to a gas tube. That's to keep pressures neutralized. The tube connects to keepers that act like the trap on a sink to prevent odor.

BTW, I think the decrepid seats are better than the club. :-) Anyone seeing that will assume the bug is junk and not worth stealing. Also, the chain has the same problem as the club: 5 seconds with a sharp hack saw and it slides right off.

Hijack. I too smell gas, but my gas smells like its old and stinky. I seem to smell it when I fill it up or when driving up a steep hill. No leaks.

Many folks have shortened the gas fume breather tube that extends from the filler neck. If this tube goes straight down to the drain hole in the body- this may be the problem. It should have a loop that clips along the side of the trunk- extending above the maximum "waterline" of the fuel in the tank. Anything shortened will simply drain as fuel sloshes- and drip inside the fenderwell.

I have the same exact problem after my7 last fill-up last night..
Stupid gas attendant didn't pay attention, I had to do his job for him...
I wonder how to get the smell out now...

I always fill my own tank on my '62 for that very reason, although I live in NJ where it's illegal to do so. No attendant has yet told me I can't.

I keep a box of Arm & Hammer in the front next to the gas tank fillup.

Great idea, and it's illegal in Oregon to pump your own gas unless it's a motorcycle, but that will change for me now.

You crazy Oregonians and your crazy gas attendants.

Haha, I know... Used to live up in Oak Harbor, WA for a few years, and in Europe for 17 years, I prefer pumping gas myself, it's what real men do, but I guess it provides for at least 4 jobs per gas station in Oregon, in that way it's a bit better for those lesser educated people or young kids with first jobs.

I assume it works like a P-Trap in sink to stop sewer gasses and such. What is in the line, fuel or something else?

I keep hearing it is illegal to pump your own Gas. I have grown up in Kansas and Tennessee and that is crazy to us. What is the thinking behind it. Safety or liberal regulations?

Since its someone's job here to pump gas, it's like taking a job away from that person by pumping own gas. They are not going to stop you tho, but in cases like a spill, they are responsible for it, cleaning it, and it's on them if someone drives off with the pump still attached. The gas attendant knew that pump had issues, but chose to ignore it till someone had the car flooded, lol. So I could have their job taken if I complain about it, but they didn't even offer a free wash or pay for the gas... Irritates me, but due to my schedule I don't want to deal with it.

The jobs argument was and is a "positive" side affect from the pump law itself, it might be the reason now - but not the reason why it started. The law came into affect in 1951:

OregonLive wrote: ...when Oregon first mandated that only trained station workers could put "Class 1 flammable liquids" into cars, the state mainly didn't want people accidentally blowing things up.

But despite big safety advances in pump and auto technology, Oregon voters and legislators have resisted changing things. In fact, the statute contains 17 justifications for the self-serve ban. They run the gamut from protecting small children left in cars to preventing spills to keeping older drivers from "unreasonable discomfort.

The justification that's cited most often is that the law creates jobs," said Oregon State University economist Patrick Emerson. Of course, Emerson, who writes about "life, liberty and the pursuit of self-service gas" on his blog, is convinced the ban is not only archaic but actually drags down the economy.

Does anyone have pictures of how the gas fume breather tube should be run? I must admit it makes since to loop it, but I have never seen it done that way. Does it require a clip to keep it in place or what? Pictures would help if you have them.

Here's how it looks on my '62:

The vent hose is circled.

I think in an original bug not affected by rust there are clips that the breather tube connects to. The bow is needed in case gas gets sloshed up the intake. Without the bow the tube could act as a syphon and drain gas rather than preventing it.

Just a guess. I've seen photos of the tube in place in a manual somewhere but I can't find it at the moment.

You can see the clips and the "bow" in the pic above.
