Hey Folks,

Got the THING outta the garage Saturday for a test run, been sidetracked with the other project I've been muckin with. (the old Ford Truck).

Anyways, I'm planning on doing the spring time tuneup, oil change,
valve adjustments etc, but 2 items seem to have escaped my attention
and I'd like to remedy that.

1: Clutch cable /pedal adjustment:
Is it as easy as taking a pedal travel measurement and tighting the wing nut on the clutch cable?
Cause it "the wing nut" wont budge, May need the little tool for that.
not sure if the threads are caked or if it's got spring pressure on it making it tight.

2: the shifter: she rattles after driving sometimes it can get real loud depending on outside temp and how much driving i'm doing.
isn't there a bushing or somthing to replace to fix that?
Not really sure how involved it is to do, (remove seats? for easy access).
now that I'm typing this seems I recently saw a post....will need to search more.

Didnt see much on the clutch adjustment (in searches) I have no idea when the last adjustment was ever done on my THING. My pedal moves
quite a bit before it gets tension so I'm figuring it's needing tightning.

well, I thought I'd throw that out there if anyone has any suggestions
or relevant links/post please advise.

Thanks and hope all are doing well.

The cross shaped tool which fits over the wing nut doesn't help much.
You can put a "vice grips" on the non threaded part of the cable end to hold it while you adjust the wing nut.
The wing nut is shaped to "lock" into the clutch arm, so the wing nut won't back off un-intentionally. With the driver's side rear wheel removed, I use the open end of a 21mm combination wrench on the clutch arm. With a big screwdriver or any steel rod through the box end, you can twist the clutch arm toward the front of the car to release tension on the cable; making the adjustment easy with just your fingers.

The shift rod bushing is easy to replace; There must be a million posts on that.
I'm happy with the quality of the bushing from WW; same as on a Beetle.
Good luck, Mondshine

there is much discussion here on the shaft bushing...i'm not techno savy enough to link them for you. the job is simple enough (and cheap!), but it took me a couple tries to get it right. might examine (replace) the shift rod coupler (sp.?) while your'e at it. you'll be happy that you did.

i love the simple little jobs that deliver immediate gratification.
