Okay I scored this at the OCTO and it cleaned up pretty good. I have a few questions on them.

1) What era recliner do I have ?

I only found literature from pre55 vw/porsche and they look identical except that mine have "KEIPER PATENT" stamped onto the lower arm on both sides and in the literature they do not.

2) how does it function ?

I can turn the knob and the side with the knob does turn the gear's and the seat will recline but the other side with NO knob does not turn but does have gears.

3) does the side with no knob move's / reclines from the weight of the individual sitting in the seat ?

4) is there a bar inside the one bar that connects the 2 halves/sides that rotates the opposite side with the gears ?

Please help I don't want to destroy the recliner as it's really cool.

Are you sure they are for VW? I have seen similar on Mercedes and Opel cars over here. Late 50ties early 60ties.

Is it not too broad for a bug seat? And the lower parts that are marked with Kieper, they look to short to reach down to the pin on the lower seat pipe. Strange english, uh?
