Yep, that's the way it is. You can't just drive off to do some camping vacation. And very limited for personel or pleasure use. But you can use it for what it is at shows and events and to and fro from them. Sleep in it, eat in it, or whatever. Since there are automotive events about everywhere all the time around here it's no big deal. My trips to Cali, Nevada, down south and the high country pretty much always end up at a show or some organized event. And it might take a few extra days to drive there.

Skills yes - that is what they told me. The policy I have now allows camping alone other than an event. I can also use it for any daily driver type use I want even go shopping at the mall if I want to. The only downside is that I get 10,000 miles a year max and a $1000 deductible where-as the policy you have was a zero deductible but the camping had to be a sponsored event.

Again I have to review the info but let's say I head from CT to your place and we go to a show. I can camp along the way or stay at a hotel. It is still covered. Mannys66 in the split forum left new york heading to florida. He got hit on 95 in his bus. Iirc they are paying to have his bus fixed. He was heading to florida for a show....

Hi Skills - I am not arguing with you - just repeating what they told me. They told me that the decision to repair or void the poliicy would be theirs in such a situation - that they could consider it daily use if they chose to because anything over 150 miles a "prudent" show person would trailer their bus. I said "so I don't own a trailer and the show is in Los Angeles which is 500 miles away. I spend the night in Bakersfield at a KOA rather than drive thru and take a risk cause I am tired. What then if the bus gets sideswiped leaving the KOA and the driver is uninsured?" They said, "the decision to insure you or call it an unisured use would be theirs to decide. If they are in a year with low losses they would probably insure but if they had high losses recently they would probably decline to cover it. They suggested I insure it myself by setting $5,000 a year aside for 5 years.

This was about 18 months ago. Since then I found the agreed value policy ($25,000 value right now and not a stated value policy but rather agreed value) that allows camping as a use. Mine is thru a well known company and the agent who found the policy is USAA so they act as a co-insurer as well. If we decide to take the bus to Raleigh this year from California and travel Route 66 along the way, see the Grand Canyon and stay in the Great Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge then come back thru Lexington and Ohio, across the Great Plains etc - we are covered the whole way.

I'm not trying to pick a fight either. Just relaying what I was told. Who knows I may be asking you for your insurance info so I can properly insure my bus. It is a nightmare for sure....

I'm getting on the Hagerty wagon. Seems reasonable. It's for club, show or pleasure driving and maint. That's pretty broad language. I'm heading to the NDBS in Daytona and it's a 4 hour ride. My club hdqtr's a good 30 miles away. My shop is another 1/2 in the other direction. And since I'm in S.Fla. You can't hardly drive north without aiming at some show somewhere. This is for my '72. I have a company supplied work truck and 4 other daily drivers in the driveway. I know I'll bend a rule or 2, I'll just make sure I'm heading towards one of the allowed activities. This summer I'll might be able to answer the OP's question when we start driving the Westy. Mean while I'll investigate the other ins. providers in this thread.

well, as promised, after much scrutiny and back and forth with haggerty, it left me feeling like i was caught with my pant's down

so, after sending tons of photos of both my 71 westy and 71 single, here is what they had to say

first, the truck was 'un-insurable' to them. the photos of the bed 'make it look like it was used for hauling' fucking really? what part of survivor did they not understand? i't not like it wasn't used for it's intended application for the past 41 years so, the single cab get's the boot

the westy on the other hand, they will still insure, however after listening to the girl on the phone, i had a pit in my stomach, something didn't 'feel' right. the fact that it is a camper, and i will camp in it was a grey area.

it seems that 'we don't want you to use it as a camper, but you can camp in it at a show/event' ooookaayy, so i can use it, but not really? so, at this point, i am unsure what to do or who to call

any advice? i REALLY want proper insurance, but don't want to be left out in the cold if i do camp in it at a show, or on my way to a show. bastards...

told you. If you are looking to insure a trailer queen they are the people to go to. We drive ours so American Collectors Insurance fit perfect.

skills@eurocarsplus Tue May 15, 2012 4:35 pm

what has me pissed about them is the fact they won't touch the single cab. the camper restrictions i can live with, but right now i have 6 cars, registered and insured. i don't need/want 3 different bills every month. i will try american collectors, but iirc, they wouldn't touch the camper. i'll try them again

Hagertys told me right up front that 'using the vehicle for its intended purpose' would not be covered. They do not want pick ups hauling loads, or westys being used for camping.

The real reason I did the antique thing was to save money. 3 drivers, 6 cars-3 on 'normal' insurance, 2 on antique, 1 unregistered. Oh, too bad one of the consequences is that my 17 yr old cannot drive either AC VW.

Its a shame that auto insurance goes with the vehicle- it would make so much sense if it went with the person- hell, you can only drive one car at a time, and if it was carried in your pocket, how often would cars be lent out?

what you drive is a factor in what kind of risk you and your passengers are. A 25 year old in a Shelby Cobra is a bigger risk than a 25 year old in a Toyota Corolla.

Skills - if American Collectors won't take a Westy or SC/DC let us know so we won't suggest them next time.

Thanks SG....the thing with the single cab is I have another truck. I have not even used the single for hauling. They denied it because the bed isn't mint and shows rubbed through paint

I got the same basic story with Hagerty with the following caveat.. All their policies forbid driving the vehicle on VACATION since that is considered “daily driving” and unless you are actually AT the show any camping is considered vacation.

I don’t know if that is accurate since I’ve been told so many stupid things by agents I’m not sure what to believe anymore, but at least it sounds plausible.

I’ve been going through the process again this year since my recent renewal came in at two and a half times the price of last years.

If you only use it as a camper (like us) one possible route that may be worth exploring was to insure it as a Class B camper van with RV insurance, unfortunately as a ’73 my Westy did not have a Fridge/Stove/Toilet and I would have needed 2 of the 3 to be a camper. (at least that was the excuse)

fuckers. they won't touch a camper either. they are *thinking* about the single cab, and "need more time to go over things with the underwriters"

i just sent them more photo's of both cars. this dosen't need to be this difficult......

Does progressive have a garanteed payout? I can only imagine what a 40 year old camper would be valued at.

Whitley Thu May 17, 2012 7:21 am

I insured my 76 Westy with Ky Farm Bureau. They wrote a full coverage/$15,000 declared value policy since its not my primary driver. No big deal, costs about $15 per month since we have all our insurance through them.

ghiastein Thu May 17, 2012 8:16 am

My Bus is just a driver/camper and not really worth tons. I tried to insure it as regular vehicle so I can use it whenever. I had it quoted with an agreed value of what I thought my bus was worth to replace. After receiving my quote I was shocked to find out that is was going to cost me more to insure the bus than my daily driver. After doing the math I figured out that within 3 years my insurance cost would equal the full amount I have invested in my Bus. So what I decided on is by just carrying liability insurance and keeping enough money in savings to replace my bus. I can fully enjoy my bus and replace it if needed.

skills@eurocarsplus Thu May 17, 2012 9:10 am

Called Grundy today. Willing to do a agreed value policy very few limitations, and I can use it for whatever whenever as long as it isn't 100% for daily use. I can use the single as a truck and the camper as a camper....imagine that! Waiting for more info....
