So I'm coming up on a purchase of the Just Kampers car cover, which is 'pretty good' at water repelling, but not perfect. A long, drenching rain will cause it to permeate.

I was thinking of treating it with Scotchgard, but since they took the good stuff (meaning, the Persistent Organic Pollutant) out of it, the treatment lasts about a month, rather than 6 months.

How about WD40 on tight weave fabric? Anyone ever experimented or have an opinion?

I'd be afraid of the WD staying greasy and messing with your paint, time for a trip to your local tent and outdoor store to ask them.

In the 70's I was broke but worked at an old fashion hardware store where i could buy anything for cost so I soaked a new cotton drop cloth in Thompson's Water Seal to make a car cover for my classic car. It worked so well I made another for my motorcycle. I don't recall ever having any negative effects. I poured a gallon in a big bucket and soaked the cloth. Then I took it out and hung it on a cloths line till dry. I even put brass grommets on it for the rope to hold the cover on.

I don't know if the new product is the same as the old one so read the label to be sure it will still work on cloth.

Do they still make a product called "Camp Dry?"

Go to walmart and in the camping section get two cans of the water repellent spray for tents (cant rember the name). works great and under $10 for both. My cover is designed for indoor use only (dust cover) but occasionally I have to park outside and have had no issues with water getting through.

I think I would stick with the scotch gaurd and just treat it more often.

Sport wash. It is for gortex type of jackets, but it works on tents too.

gordo.
