Hi all, I'm rebuilding my buggy from the ground up. Chasis, paint and motor are pretty much done. I'm on the wiring now except I have an issue.
The old motor I ran used a Holy Bugspray. It had clearance issues when the air cleaner was on so I had to cut a hole in the body. However with the new paint and body work I had it filled back in. I bought a single weber IDF w. empi manifold with short stacks and filter. Even though its shorter than the bug spray it still hits the body. So I could (but won't) cut the body again or shim the body 1"in the back so it clears. Although the shim might be the cheapest route I wan't to keep a low profile and with the body slightly higher in the back the space between the body and top of the tire is larger. I have an older 60's swing axle so lowering it more would leave me with neg. camber which I don't really want either.
So i'm wonder if anyone else with an empi imp body has clearance issues with carbs. I tried a couple solex duals and they hit the body where the rear is braced. I couldn't use them at all and sold them.
If you have an empi I would like to hear what you run for a carb and intake. I've heard you can get a shorter intake but can't fiind one anywhere without having to buy a carb with it.
If anyone is curious the new motor is a 1914cc with 4:1 ratio rockers, 110 engle cam and the 40 IDF single weber with larger jets.
I'm considering getting duals again with shorter intakes but would like to know if anyone is doing this without clearance issues on the empi imp body.
Thanks, Mike

Well, looks like i should have searched again. CB performance has a low profile manifold that works with weber IDF carbs and a optional linkage kit that includes the filter and plate. Looks like it should do the trick and if so problem solved. After that all I have left to do is get the tank customized for the empi imp hood, get the bumpers, tin and fan shroud powder coated slightly darker than the paint, bolt down the body and wire the guages. Its been a great winter project. Just wish I had more money!!!
Cheers, Mike
(still interested in knowing if any empi imp owners have had clearance issues and what setup you went with) |

I am running a stock Solex carb in my Imp for now. I have a once inch body lift all around. I had to use a small air filter not much wider than the top of the carb. I appreciate your info because I will be looking to upgrade in the future.
What bumpers are you going to buy? The baja style rear bumpers need to be modified. My bumper brackets interfere with the rear body mounts that attach to the shock mounts. |

| WARNING WARNING....install the motor and mock up the carbs, filters including the linkage and bolt the body down before you paint it. It's very important you do it now before paint, yeah its a pain in the ass but you won't have to worry as much when it time to assemble it. the Imp isn't forgiving when it come to room and the stupid wooden supports. good luck! |
