Just got an old cash register ( free of charge ). Can anybody help me out with a year of it? It is made by National and was 'told' it was one of the first electric model, and by looking at the wiring it is early. The only number that I found stamped on the inside frame is #5637237. It has a chrome or stainles steel outer shell and the lower body and drawer is a brown color. Does anyone know of a good Forum for these??
Thanks for any help you can shed on this. Oh, it is a heavy s.o.b. as I'm still hurting from getting it to my car even with help.

I will as soon as I can. It is apart right now for cleaning and detailing but will try to post pics of all components.

Anything like this?

Glenn Fri Mar 16, 2012 6:16 pm

With all that chrome, it must be fast.

73 KAFER Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:00 pm

Not really, mine is a little more rounder and the bottom where the drawer would be is painted a dark brown (original). there is a light with two bulbs on top and is as Glenn pointed out FAST CHROME. lol. Also has more buttons where the one pictured is bare on the right hand side as you look at the picture. Also does not have that large locking door like the one pictured.

Maybe like this but chrome?

73 KAFER Fri Mar 16, 2012 7:09 pm

Getting there. The bottom is right the upper is close but still slightly different, again more buttons all the way across and the light mounted on top, but you are getting there....how about one more pic, third times a charm.
Thanks, btw. EDIT: Went out to the garage for another look and more I look at it your second picture is very close. Just add a light that blends in on the top and chrome it and that I think would be it. What year is that one or there abouts?

That's all I got just sitting here. I have one like the one above with the lights at my office. I'll be in there tomorrow morning and post it. If you can get a picture of the case, I'll know right away.

Rob,
i have been looking around googling different things and found a 1954 National register ad that looks like the register and like the one of yours above, so I am assuming it is on or about that year.
QUESTION: How do you remove the buttons..the ones with the setscrew I know, but was affraid to pull to hard on the others as they are on there. How much do these register weigh?

This is one we just repaired for a customer. It's either a model 51 or 52. If you look on the plate where you saw the serial number, there should be more numbers that will start with a 51 or 52. I would guess they weigh around 125 lbs or so

I think this might be what you are talking about. Loosen the tightening screw and then rotate the phillips screw a little. Pull on the top of the banks and they should pop out.

The NCR 51 was produced from 1954 to 1973 , the 52 was from 1959 to 1973

Ok thanks. That looks so very close to what I have. Another question, when I plug it in the machine just runs :? and also I can't get the slider ( where the key goes...the key does turn ) to slide. Any hints? I appreciate your help on the pics.

The key tops without screws are put on by heating the key stem, special clamp on elect, and hot enuf toslightly melt the plastic as u push it on. Removing the key banks on the 51/52 don't just pop back in especially the 1st row, wide, going from rt to left. Unless it's missing, at front flat shelf like strip above fronf of drawer should have a flat plastic strip held on by a metal strip alonb the back, no's stamped give model and ser#. T flat front chrome one is a class 1900(model).The all orig came with a hand crank,if pwr off u can open drawer, even do norm operations manually. "Slider ' u r talking about can't be moved unless a operation with a key with , Balance, cash total, ets written on it and would be in bottom right row of the large keys. This 'slider gives access to 'stored totals' of the large 1st row keys,(not all)added up during days sales, can be printed / reset depending on the position. A nut shell here of oper. Motor running may jusr be a gummy parts, not operating fully , a roller in clutch missing, and motor can be easily removed if u look at it. The Cast brass/nickle plated finger operated ones are the most value.

Thanks Morymob, good to know on the buttons...won't try to force them off.
Any idea why when I plug the machine in it just motor starts turning something but wont stop?
Also I can't get the $ amount to go back to $000 right now it says $100.00 on the register.

I assume u havent operated it at all, correct? Is the $100 the display no's at the top, if so they only change at next oper and if no amt keys are pressed all will be 0's. U have to have a key in very left row, usually have A thru D or more, they identify the clerk ringing up the sale, pressed to operate at all. There is a lever sticking out at top of left, this a key release, and restore if u try to operate without a clerk key and this attempt will also cause motor to run(wear, adjustment).

As of right now I have the chrome outer cover off and have just the inner "guts" of the machine on the work bench cleaning it. When I plug it in all I hear is the motor running with some 'clicking noise' in the machine going on. Also it seems no matter what I do and no matter what button I push, I can't seem to clear the $100.00.
Also where the key goes in, does that chrome piece suppose to slide up and down? Mine does not want to move...seems like it should but wont. The key does turn and locks and unlocks.

You can't move the slider because it appears it is still in a transaction. Motor may be running running on because it's gummed up, as was said. The points may be stuck.

I gotta look to refresh my memory if there is a trip switch on that model.

So your a checker?Always wondered what you did.

As a side note my grandfather was a "spittin image" of Carrol O'Connor,(complete with TV personality) and was often mistaken for him.

Well after polishing a piece of trim I found the Model number and it is Model 51. So if anyone can help me determine the year that would be a help. I have searched but seems that everything that I search for comes up Brass type registers, which this is not. Mr. Breeze is doing some searching for me so maybe Morymob?
