I'm not sure i'm in the right spot, but I figure this should be an easy set of questions for someone here. Anyway... a buddy of mine has an old rail with an old engine in it. I looked up "engine codes" but nothing I found started with E like this block has. If you could help me solve this mystery, I'd be appreciative!

engine code E 19749

old cast distributor

strange looking tin where the heat exchangers are normally?

and finally a pic of the engine as a whole. It has a 28 pict1 on it, which I assume doesn't match....

Final answer? Is it anything interesting / desirable?

maybe someone with more knowledge than i on the subject will chime in... but it appears by the engine number its possibly a industrial 36hp from june or july of 1956. the carb and 12v alt are wrong tho.

How tight is the fit between the alternator and the generator stand, I did not think you could put a alternator on a 36hp.

The engine stamping area has clearly been ground down and restamped.

Probably just a random number some engine rebuilder used in the past.

The distributor and heater pieces are standard Beetle 36hp.

The 28 PICT is technically from a later engine but works fine on a 36hp.
