| I have a 57 US beetle and i recently came upon this problem with my passenger tail light. when i apply the brake pedal my drivers side tail light is the only one that illuminates. however my left and right turn signals work. i disconnected the Black and yellow striped wire that gets connected to the turn signal switch and checked voltage on the turn signal switch wire which read 12.4 volts without depressing pedal, however once i reconnect them and depress the brake pedal i get 0.02 volts. when i turn on my right turn signal it allows current to flow at 12.35 volts on and off... which is activating the blinker relay which is working normally. i am not sure what is the problem here.... all my lights including headlights are working except my passenger brake light (only when depressing the brake). |

did it ever work correctly? did you instal anything new?
your turn signal has 4 outputs for lights
front right, front left, rear right, rear left
if you install the wire coming from your turn signal that is designated to be used as the front right, for your back right, it will not work with your breaks .
you need to confirm that you have the right wire going to your back passenger tail light... if i were you id invest in a 12volt test light ( http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=test+ligh...CHYQ8wIwAQ )
you would then need to step on the brake and hook up the test light to each one of the wires coming off your turn signal to see if it lights up. out of the 4 wires coming from your turn signal designated for turn signs, 2 of them shoudl light up...those 2 being the 2 that go to the rear of the car. |

| If both left and right rear turn signals work properly, then your problem is in the switch which has a faulty contact. Notice that the brake light(s) power goes from the master cylinder switch to the turn signal switch; this is so that when the turn signal is on it can interrupt the brake light power for left or right. If you have the fronts and back light wires mixed up at the switch they will still light, but you will see that the front comes on when the brake pedal is depressed. |
