i just picked up this 68 squareback last night for a screaming deal, she needs some work... gonna be intouch with a place down in grants pass top have them rebuild my tired little motor into a nice little 1641... not sure what size the motor is, but i do know it has a pair of baby webers 34 ICT's, also has a rusty header bolted to it, but thats gonna leave soon...

on the trip home, survived rain, sleet, snow, hail, wind

can't really tell in the last pic, but it has very faint ghost flames, actually pretty cool looking, also came with a couple bags of extras in it, also in thoes items i have found a PPG pint paint can with the color code in it with some paint still in it

so far i have attempted to tear into some of the electrical gremlins, so far i have got the left turn signal to work properly, the right one works, but very rapidly

so far on my list of things to do
1641 engine rebuild
lower the front and back
eure flat top tail lights
redo all the body work on it
15X4.5 BRM wheels
get the front bumper straightened out
full set of TMI door panels
here are some interior shots

what i'm shooting for

DaBlackSamba Sun Mar 18, 2012 11:09 pm

middle of BFE in washington, about 12 miles west of centrailia, i might be sending you some PM's about parts since there are a few i am missing, and some fenders that have some rust issues

i think i saved this one, it belonged to the the owners of the lot i bought it from, it was scheduled to goto auction today, but i swooped down there yesterday, and picked it up, the motor is a little soft in cyl # 1, but i did get a chance to drive it around the sub division at my parents place, and its got some get up and go, but not gonna trust that motor, the owner of the car said it would make it the 180 mile trip, but we decided to trailer it back, and having a chance to drive it, there is no way that car would have made it back, the tires are all rotten on it, the brakes suck on it, i jabbed the brakes a couple times on my test drive, and the front brakes grip good, now the back ones, they are not there, of course the master cyl was almost empty

Thats sweet , pretty local to you so I will have to watch this one.

after trying to track down the electrical gremlins in this beast, i have come to a conclusion... who ever did some of the wiring in this car was an absolute retard... under the passenger fender where the wiring goes from the body into the headlight bucket, they used butt connectors, not what i would have done, but not bad, but on the drivers side under the fender they used household wire nuts to connect the wires, and in the headlight bucket they used electrical tape on one of the wires, and the other 2 that goes into the headlight plug used masking tape to hide the exposed wires...aye vey........ also when they put together, they failed to put the fender beading inbetween the fenders, and body

That thing is pretty friggin clean dude!

I just rewired 65notchback's whole car with a rebel kit (that's not for the faint at heart), it had a butt splice on every single wire. I even modified the fuel gauge socket so the turn indicators work independently.

DaBlackSamba Mon Mar 19, 2012 11:25 am

now thats some trick stuff with the turn signals, how hard was that to do? also its had the trim shaven off the sides, but still has the holes on the hood for the hood handle, now would it be better to have the holes just sealed up on the hood, or try to find another hood handle? also is it wrong to refer to it as a variant eventhou it is not known by that here?

supaninja Mon Mar 19, 2012 11:43 am

If it was a US market square then it's a squareback, if it's a euro then it's a variant. That's how I understand it.

It was a easy modification, I just snipped one wire and ran it through the rivet that holds the socket to the plug, and soldered on a spade connector. Then used indicator leads from the rebel kit (but all you need is to splice into the stock wiring that goes to the blinkers), and volla independent blinker indicators. I was already in there to modify some of the wiring since the German's wire things differently then American's and the rebel kit is for American hotrods. It took me 5 days to wire it up with that kit since I had to make heads and tails of everything, the kit had horrible directions (I ended up drawing my own diagram of how it was setup to figure out what I needed to do), and I had to make my own harnesses for all the wire runs, and lengthen/shorten a bunch of wires. It turned out really slick and everything worked when I first powered it up (well not the starter, since I plugged the wire onto the wrong terminal, derp)

yeah, took me a while i had spotted it saturday morning, and had instantly talked them down to $3000 over the phone, and after a few hours of hem hawing over it, adn giving the motor the rev test, and seeing the smoke, we talked them down another $500, but it cost us another $100 to rent a uhaul dolly, and took 4 hours to get home at 55 mph braving rain, hail, snow, sleet, wind, idiot drivers, but finally made it home after 10 on saturday eve, luck to get it when we did, it was suppost to run thru auction yesterday morning, and i thought maybe i could get it for less, but thought shit, it could possibilly go higher, because there was a couple of guys eyeing it in the lot, so we had to work quick

update on the motor tonight, my dad ran acold compression test tonight, and every cyl was between 130-135, and he also poped the valve covers, and the oil screen, and he was pleased with what he saw

That's a clean engine and I'm pleased to see the 311 part numbers on the heads- they're the correct higher compression heads for a Type 3.

Now, what will it take to talk you into getting rid of those stupid dual Satans and putting the correct Digijet fuel injection on there?

I just might happen to know where some parts to do that might be.

DaBlackSamba Mon Mar 19, 2012 11:26 pm

so are you trying to tell me that that car is a fuel injection car?

actually drives like a bat out of hell with them on there

whats funny, is mine has very faint ghost flames on the nose of it, not sure if i will put them back on when the body gets redone, or i may go with something a little more modern

Brent Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:04 am

Nice find! Looks super straight and clean.

I'm assuming you're getting new door panels and losing the speaker holes. That's a horrible place to put them. Hopefully the door isn't hacked out too bad.

DaBlackSamba Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:08 am

i hope they aren't either, i have some fiberglass kick panels i plan to put in, so far there has been alot of special stuff done to this car, using sheet metal screws to attach door panels, and the the stainless trim on the dast is just the icing ont he cake i fear
