I recently posted a thread about the air by pass valve on my 1974 super beetle. I attempted to adjust the carbas depicted in one of the threads. What I have found was the the large air volume screw doesn't seem to make the engine idle faster. If I add more air, turnning the screw out it dies, turnning the screw in doesn't change the idle. In order to get the car to idle and it idles rough is by loosening the air by pass valve, turnning it out causing an air leak. I have not tested for other leaks as of yet. Can I have some advice on what to do from here. THis car is fairly new to me and my wife wants to drive it with realiabitly!!!! I did have the car tunned up beginning of the summer which ran great until I broke the accelerator cable. It has been down hill from that point. Please help.

Try holding the choke partialy closed and try backing out the large screw. If this helps you need to look for a large air leak. See -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/wontidle.htm

Did you try checking the idle selenoid on the side of the carburetor?

I just attempted to check the slenoid out today. I find that when I took the power off I heard one click. If I cont. to touch the terminal with the power lead it doesn't click all the time in fact hardly at all. This is also how sparatic the car seems to idle as well. I even took the selenoid out and put power to the swtich to see if the rod will draw in. No luck. Is this a good assumption that this valve is junk and this causing all of my problems?

Something you might try If you think your idle solenoid is bad is to cut the plunger off. If you get the idle back ok,then you can replace it or run with it cut off. If your engine desides to keep running when you shut the key off, then you will have to get a new sol......Have you pulled the idle jet out and cleaned it?
