what's the shift knob in BUG 1303s (model 1973) originally?

Nice looking cars there at the website.

Can't help much with 1303s, in the US they were just called Super Beetles.

folks_wagen66 Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:00 pm

then, what do you call to 1303 bug?

Joel Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:55 pm

They go by different names in different countries.
Europe they are a 1303, North America is a Super Beetle, here in Australia is a Superbug L, etc.

AFAIK 68 onwards bugs all use the same gear knob (excluding some special editions) but the 73 onwards have that grainy texture like the dash on the top, before that they are smooth.

folks_wagen66 Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:58 pm

what about options in 1303S?

Joel Wed Mar 21, 2012 12:04 am

I think it was only Europe that was spoiled with a choice of different package levels and engine sizes.

Here and North America had a couple of special editions but they all only came with a 1600 engine, we also got discs brakes standard too,
but Europe they were available with 1200, 1300, and 1600 engines, disc or drum, low back or high back seats etc with the 1303, 1303A, 1303S and 1303LS models.

thanks

what about shift knob?

wooden or plastic origionally?

65'1300Deluxe Wed Mar 21, 2012 12:04 pm

Plastic was used on standard models, with some of the special editions having a wood-grained knob ( GT beetle, I think). The wood knob was also an optional dealer extra for every car. Just like mud flaps.

also I think GT wheels are optional,

how could I find original color & option by 10 digit of my bug?

Obtain a birth certificate, that will tell you any M codes and special options your VW may have had.

folks_wagen66 Wed Mar 21, 2012 8:39 pm

how could I find this code?

65'1300Deluxe Wed Mar 21, 2012 10:36 pm

You would either need to get one of the birth certificates from Wolfsburg, or obtain the original dealership bill of sale. Only type 2's came with an actual metal tag just for the M-codes. The codes are also listed on this site for reference, under 'technical'.

folks_wagen66 Sun Mar 25, 2012 10:38 pm

how can I find information about my bug by serial number in web?

Ross UK Mon Mar 26, 2012 12:45 pm

Dude,

Here in Europe we roll like this....

1303 = 1300 engine + drum front front brakes.
1303S = 1600 + disc front brakes + higher ratio final drive gearbox.

Joel Mon Mar 26, 2012 1:32 pm

They also came with a 1200 engine known as 1303A but not many of them sold as you had to get out and push when wind speeds reached more than 4 knots.
