View original topic: Tire size for Fuchs
VDUBZ Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:04 am

I have a 56 oval body sitting on a 69 IRS pan. I have a set of Flat-4 fuchs (15x6 deep) for the rear but I'm unsure of a tire size that will fit, I'm mostly concerned about the tire being too wide since it's an IRS.

I also have 15x4.5 up front but those tire sizes are a no brainer.

I want this kind of stance.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Your issue is the fact that you have long axles/irs on a car that didn't come that way. Your rear track will more than likely be wider and closer to the rear fender than the car you have pictured.

You might want to bolt the wheel up to your drums and see where the fit in the fender wheel. I am running a 205/65 on the rear of my 63. The car pictured probably has that size or a 205/70. If you had the stock suspension in your car it would be easier to give you a suggestion.

Good luck.

The ET of a 6" Fuchs is large enough that just about any tire you can put on a 6" wheel will fit. You may need to fine tune the position of the wheel with a spacer.
A 7" Fuchs with a 205 tire fits an IRS car.

Bruce, are you absolutely sure 205's will not rub? I've been trying to look up 69 and up beetles running fuchs but there isn't too many running them.

the bug pictured has adapters in the rear pushing the deep 6's out, so your irs will probably be ok.. BUT it will not look like that because you will not have camber

That's the whole reason I went with the IRS. I don't really dig massive camber. So 205/65's will work?

Absolutely.

In the early 90s, I tried using a 225 on a 7" wheel. The tire rubbed a small amount on the fender. Since a 205 is a narrower tire, it will work.

I have a friend today who uses 7" Fuchs and a 205 tire. No rubbing.
The extra inch on a 7 is all on the outside, so your 6" wheel will have ½" more tire clearance than my buddy's car has now.

Here are pics of his car with 7s.

What exact size is he using(205/65, 205/70)? That stance looks perfect. That's one sweet ride though.

205/65/15 out back will fit and will look GOOD. for the front take advantage of modern tire sizes. the 165/60/15 from the side looks almost dead like a 135r15 that everyone loves the "look" of but they give you a better footprint. side wall height between the two is less than 1/16" difference. i've ran a TON of 135s and have to say i really can't see myself ever doing so again. you can get a better modern tire usually same price or cheaper...ken....

same here Ken. I'll never run 135's again. I didn't like the first smart car tires, the super low ones everyone uses on buses. I think the last ones I used were 145/60... not sure. but waayy better than 135sr15's

I believe his tires are 205/55/16. Wheels are 16x7s. They have the same ET as a 15x7, and the same backspacing as a 15x6.
