| I just bought a sand rail. The title is a 66. The engine is a 1972. It has an obvious rear axle seal leak. My question is how the heck do I identify the year of the rearend to order the right seal? |

That's a swing axle.
I think the axle seals are the same for 61-79 beetles. You could always pull the old one and measure it. Make sure the axle nut is torqued properly too if it's not it can leak.

Got one of these? :wink:
Axle nut removal tool.
or some people use this Torque Meister.
I use a 3/4 drive breaker bar, 36mm socket, with a 4 foot piece of pipe.

Use a breaker bar with a pipe over it, to make it longer.

Longer = more torque! |

Use a 3/4 of 1 inch drive socket/breaker bar with cheater pipe....
You can break the best quality 1/2 inch drive easily and when you are at full tilt on energy on bar and it breaks you will get hurt.....

Yup, I've broken more than one 1/2 drive breaker bars so I got a 3/4 drive.
Torque on the cover is 22 ft/lbs I think. Axle nut is 253+ ft/lbs.
