Do You Have A Bentley Manual??

oxflabtw Fri Mar 23, 2012 1:10 pm

no I sure dont have a Bentley, I have a '68 provisional workshop manual for the auto trans and diff.
I am printing it now off a disc , but it has very lil details about changing the seal,
I had read on here where it has to be at a certain depth?

Ive messed with vw's for about 20 years but this is my first automatic.
I am getting ATF in the differental , after about a 1/2 mile ride there was no ATF showing on the dip stick, and ATF dripping from the axle drive flanges at the inner cv joints. I have the gasket to go between the trans and gear case, also heard the governor shaft seal will do this to, so figured I'd change it also.

then you need to rebuild it

You need to reseal the diff completely,if the automatic part still shifts right and dont slip just reseal the diff. Buy a kit from bulkpart and that will have all of th
e seals you need.if you dont reseal the whole diff you are asking for trouble.

ddesh thanks
I will check them out, it shifted fine, towords the end of the ride, there was a chatter when it down shifted coming to a stop, not sure if that was from the fluid level dropping of somethng else like the brake bands? it didnt do it to start with. I have it in a trike, so its not big deal to snatch it all out. oh,, also the car it came out of was drug outta a growed up field the tag that was on it exp in '82 so it sat a long time. I got lucky the motor runs so smooth, never touched the carbs or anything, other than plugs and wires , lucked out there.

you need to get a full seal kit...then tear it down and inspect the differential and bearings. The problem with this seal failure is not that it damages the automaticsection....thats just a cleaning issue. The mixing of automatic transmission fluid and gear oil in teh differential can destroy the differential in short order. Ray

My transmission was rebuilt and I am getting fluid mixture too.

It has to be the governor shaft seal.

questions
1- what tool do I use to pull the old seal out? (dental pick?)
2- what is the part number for the seal
3- what is the proper depth and tool required to re-install new seal
4- lastly is it at all possible to change this seal with the engine and trans still in the vehicle?

Thanks

VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE MANUAL Type 3 1968 through 1973 by Bentley has a complete Chapter 8 on the AT/003 transmission. People have rebuilt their own transmissions using this Manual.

Thanks Mike. I will see if my public library has it.
I have a 73 Bus so I don't want to buy the type 3 book, just for one chapter unless I have too.

From what ive learned talking to others its most likely the gov seal.
on mine the seal is national # 221040 they say its not make it anymore, i found one on ebay.
from what I can see is the only way to get it out is to push it all the way thru which would mean taking the gear case apart. I plan on trying to stick something in the hole and mark the depth then try and get it back to the same depth. cant find the tool for it available.
I went ahead and ordered a overhaul gasket set, to have everything, but got the seal seperate. should get the gasket set in a few days. here is a link to a vw manual on the oo3 trans you can download, it may help some. if this is the same trans you have.
it will prob be a couple weeks before I have a chance to tear into mine.

then i searched and found that i posted in 2010 of the same thing

I guess im going to have to take it out and go replace it this time

here is a link to O'reillys for the "National" oil seal you were referring to
