I'm off to see a musical at the theater, it's called "The King and I"
never seen a musical, I'm told it has good tunes.

Last month I saw a Ballet (Swan lake) by the Russian State ballet co.
Which I enjoyed immensely.

neither of these remotely interested me until recent events in my life changed my views, I can only say how much I regret being so blinkered and prejudiced.

Anyone got a good recommendation for an opera?

I liked "Jesus Christ Super Star" back in 73

Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung will stir up the German in ya (even if you don't have any)

"Little Shop of Horrors" was fun even at the local level

Wagners ring series at Bayreuth. Trams recommendation would be great. Being in Europe I would think there would be a lot to see.

Haven't personally seen it yet but the music from "Avenue Q" has me rolling on the floor. It's a take off of Sesame Street and is hilarious! A few tracks I've heard are:

"What do you do with a BA in English",(Sucks to be me) Featuring, yes, of all people, Gary Coleman!
"Everyone's a little bit racist" &
"It's ok to be gay"

I'd like to see "Wicked" also. Look up the song,"Popular".

I listen to "broad way musicals and show tunes" on Pandora,(yeah 42 year old geek ass),when I'm not listening to raw or urban comedy :lol:

Watched "Hair" on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, in 1969 or 1970
(Hey, it was the 60's, my memory is a little "fuzzy" about some of those times) 8)

Meredith Willson was one of the great 20th cent'y American composers.

Some of the other lighter opera stuff to check out is, of course, "Porgy and Bess" as well as "The Chocolate Soldier". Anything Victor Herbert should be on the list as well.

I've seen a ton. My wife and I used to have season tickets to a small theater called "Interplayers" here in Spokane. Those were a lot of fun. As far as big broadway shows go though, my favorite has been Miss Saigon by a small margin over Wicked. I've seen Le Misrables and it was "misrables". I've seen 9-5, Cats (pooey), Mamma Mia, The Lion King (awesome), Young Frankenstein (awesome), and am going to see In The Heights in April.
I saw one called "Spring Awakening" and right before intermission the two main characters were kissing, the man tore her blouse open and popped her tit in his mouth. That's EXACTLY where they started after intermission too.
All I could think of is what my 80-year-old female friend (who had tickets the night before) must have thought of it!

Come to find out, she couldn't see exactly what they were doing anyway.

I never knew that there was a thing called "light opera"
This sounds more entertaining, as I may be able to follow the story as well as listening to the music.

The Ballet was utterly fascinating, The story had to be told in dance, very cleverly.

Pure opera I go for something in a language I know nothing about, refuse to read up on the story line, and just listen to the vocals.
My wife trained as an opera singer (soprano) and fills me in on the soap storyline later.

It ain't opera but "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is great on stage.

See if you can see "The Magic Flute", "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" all by Mozart.
