| Might be a strange question, but I will be need a motor sooner than later. I can buy complete motors with heads and cylinders, but I was wondering if anyone sells a motor with just case assembled and then I can reuse my cylinders and heads? Seems the savings could be substantial this way. |

can this guy help you? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1107599
most of the engine builders in my area won't sell anything less than a long block so they can run test the engine and have proof that the engine is good before selling. |

| when I google short blocks and look at them in the classifieds, I see no rods. so you need to disassemble the short block to put in the rods. which diminishes the value of a block assembled by a pro. |

not quite, you can put the rods on and torque them with the case together |

most places including my work wont sell just a short block because they cant control what is screwed to it to complete it. It seems that the majority of people that ask us about it want to put the old used pistons and cylinders and heads on a new bottom end. that is ok to a point but chances are the cylinders need to be bored and honed, valves/guides replaced, valve job etc. The problem is that they use all the old worn parts on it and then call to complain that the rebuilt motor is a big piece of junk and blame the shop, when in fact the problem is all because lack of compression etc.
Personally i like building bottom ends and hate installing the top end stuff. I would love to do short blocks all day |
