i have been looking at the ride height of my super lately.. it sits awful high.. its a little over 10 inches off the ground.. and setting next to my friends 72 sb its definately higher.. is lowering a daily driver a good idea? i want the maximum life out of this car, but i drive on many many windy roads and do try to make good time.. i just dont want to flip over..

Super Low Suspension, 71-73 Super, kit 299.00 from topline sounds good.. but i have no idea whats in it.. my rear shocks are shot as it is.. the wheels will actually bounce and make me swirve all over the place on a hard acceleration.. or a bumpy road..

any suggestions on doing so with a poor college kids budget?

If your shocks are shot, you're going to get a terrible ride. Are your front struts shot too?

Here's what I'd do: Replace the rear shocks with stock. It's easy. If the front struts are shot, replace them too - then just throw in a couple bags of softner salt in the trunk. That sounds stupid, but it lowers the front a little and evens out the ride quite a bit. Also, for me driving in snow in winter, it works well for that too.

Others will have other ideas. That's my 2 cents...

nah, the front suspension is great.. all new bushings.. the shocks are pretty stiff.. not leaking anything.. no bouncing.. corner nicely.. the struts are in great condition.. everything is nice and snug

Tyler;

Good to hear that you've got a good front end :shock:

If/when you get the classic "super beetle shimmy" where your front end vibrates a little between 45-50mph, don't panic. There are several little "fixes" that take care of that.

Gas struts they will raise the front end somewhat. Oil struts are generally recommended for stock Supers.

Drop it!!! I rebuilt the front end with all new urethane bushings from Bugpack, lowered strut inserts from Empi, and Topline's lowering kit (4.5" drop), tower bar, lower sway bar, and disc brakes. The car drives extremely well even for a daily driver. Since the kit is adjustable, if you don't like the height, just compress the springs and move the clip. I dont' know where you're driving but I'm in Canada so I don't winter drive the car. That might influence you're decision.

I drive my 72 super on a daily basis and the front has been lowered about 4 inches, I am usong a se t of adjustable struts and the ride is awwsome. I love the way the car rides and handles. I would go as far as saying, the car handles better than it did before. Do it not only for the ride but for the looks. Your car will look a hundred times better. Good luck :lol:
