I am looking for the inside mirror as well. Just from the holes alone I don't think a type 1 mirror will fit.
In the classifieds here people want from $100 to $200 dollars for one.
Anyone have an alternative to the interior 1968 squareback rear view mirror. |

Mirror and mounting arm or just the mirror?
If you have the arm, you can with some pressure, slip the ball out of the mirror and then do what Mike said. I slipped a bus mirror off of it's arm, slipped it onto the Squareback arm and voila. It worked great! |

No mirror, no arm, nothing. Just holes. |

There are no holes as such, but a wedge that snaps into the slot. The chrome was up thru '67 & plastic wrapped 68-73. I have a short plastic covered mirror similar to the one on the left, but painted all black 'In Stock'.
I still have this '67 long chrome arm which has threads inside it. I finally broke the '66 mirror stem trying to get it out! I'm not following 'pressure slip the ball out of the mirror' to combine these 2 pieces? :-k

Mike, not certain if it will work on the metal stem. I have only done it on the later ones.
Basically, I just held on to the mirror while wrapped in a towel and pulled the stem ball out of it. Difficult for me to explain, as I just tried it and it worked. Not something I was doing and thinking about the process. |

You can use one from a fastback. It just has a shorter arm and no stem that rests against the glass. |

| They are different it looks like. :x The ball is solid to the plastic stem and looks like it could be popped out of the plastic mirror head. The chrome stem twists/moves independently of the ball, which seems solid to the stainless mirror head. Damn, the stainless mirror just spins on the ball and doesn't unthread! |

if you just want a mirror.
If you're looking for a NOS one, that's a different story. |

You want a correct 68 or 69 rear view mirror. They are like the one Mike pictured above (center) with the stem that had a rubber tip against the windshield.
Do not buy a Notch or Fastback mirror. They are too short. If you do, you will never be able to see cars behind unless they are right on your bumper. Seriously.
Should look like this. This is the one I pulled the mirror off of the stem and pushed a bus mirror onto the stem.

thats what i did, found a 67? nos mirror an d used my 70+ stem
worked like a charm except my nos mirror glass reflective coat is corroded at the edges. might get some mirrors to practice smashing the glass out and pressing new ones in before I attempt it on my nos one.
As for the external mirrors.
good luck with that, I spent years looking for the correct matching set in nos only to discover RHD had their own design with the arm lengths.
the laws of physics doesn't allow such mirrors to exist, so no point for me to keep looking for them. LHD ones are about but are rare in matching sets and are typically over 100 each.
repro bug ones it is then  |

Yes, it is the same. I used a good used one. I have lots of them that I save.
BTW, you can use the vert right side mirror.

good, I been trying to get this for more than a year, VW Brazil stopped manufacturing them but looks like we may have them available soon.

as for the vert mirrors, the arms appear to slant and also the thread is most certainly different, yes I researched into using vert mirrors too, even making my own using used type 3, new bug and vert mirrors parts to get the most correct type 3 mirrors but always the issue with the removal/installation of glass.
naturally I abandoned that plan. |

I think I used a vert mirror with a thread insert to allow for the smaller thread on the repop. In another instance, I had the threaded section and just swapped the mirrors out. |

OK so for the mirror to fit my 68 square I need to look for a 68-69 mirror specifically for a square or I wont be able to see out the rear. OK got it. Now are there repos out there? Are there any that are chrome? Not trying build a nos car or anything. |
