Well, I posted not too long back about me breaking down. It was my passenger side rear drum the was completely stripped on the splines. Well I got a used drum from a buddy and it was an easy fix... So I thought. It happened again today on the way home from work and my car is currently sitting in a school parking lot until my dad can come give me a hand towing it home. Thank god I was only a couple miles away from home, so I just walked home. What could cause this to happen again? It's gotta be something more then the drum for it to happen twice within a month, right? Any pointers would be appreciated. Otherwise I'm just gunna buy a brand new drum and hopefully that'll solve the issue.

Get a german drum.

maybe a new stub axle as well, there may be play/excess clearances

if the stub is worn, when you brake your putting extra strain on the drum splines which would cause them to strip, also on acceleration the stub will start to move before the drum

when you replace both make sure the axle nut is torqued down good(230 ft/lbs if I remember correctly)

Will do, should I be able to find that online too?

should, cip1 has them, so does ww(cost twice as much), try the classifieds here as well

Yeah I'll look around. I'll probably just get it from wolfsburg. Might as well do it right lol

You need a new axle and a new drum

Proper torque is key to this repair. If you torqued it properly and it still stripped, I agree with others that the stub axle may be bad.

Proper torque doesn't mean "As tight as me and my buddy could get it with a cheater bar" :P

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah I do have a torque wrench but don't know the proper specs lol
I will order a drum and axle tonight

I read somewhere on this forum, that having the rear of the car lowered can cause stress on the spines and cause them to strip out. I have a 64 that is lowered and have stripped the splines on that vw, and I have a stock height 71, and have not had this problem.

Vinnems Sun Apr 01, 2012 11:44 pm

I'm amazed you were able to strip another drum so quickly, unless that drum was in piss poor condition when you got it.

the top 2 causes of this problem are:
#1 improper torque.
#2 cheep (non German) drums.

dont surprise me,, used drum of unknown origin. this kid probably just bolted it on without cleaning and inspecting it(no offense to the kid!!).. the splines were probably on there way out before he got the drum..

Thanks for the info Hank and no offense taken(I have the nickname of joey-half-asski with my dad lol). Believe it or not, my cv joint fell off this time, it wasn't the drum :? I need to go over the whole rear-end and make sure everything is tightened down correctly. anything else I should look at when I'm doing that?

Torque it all down to spec. make sure you have the little spreaders, use A dab of blue lock-tight

x2
get a bentleys, if for no other reason , the torque specs.

you don't want that to happen , on the highway. at full speed.

show photos of the damage, and get better answers.
really.

There's no damage at all! I still have yet to fix it, and the cv joint is still attached to the drum but not the trans. I'll take pics before I do any work, I looked the day it happened and somehow, every single bolt is still there, and so are the spacers. My dub loves me

Literally no bolts fell out, and thats after towing it over two miles
