MAN, i CANT FIND THE OIL FILTER ON MY 74 BUG? IS THERE ONE?THX?

Hi;

I'm going to assume you're not joking here.

The oil filter is actually a screen inside the drain plate on the bottom of the engine.

Pull out the drain plug and let the oil drain. Then remove the small nuts around the edge of the plate (I think there are about 7 of them). Pull off the plate and you'll find the screen. Clean it good and replace it with a gasket on both sides of it.

As per oil: You can find endless debate about that. My advice is this; if you're in a hot climate, stick with straight 30W oil, or 20W50. If you're in a cold climate, like me, I'd use 10W30 (because winter will soon be here). Whichever you use, go with a good quality oil.

HEY THANKS ALOT NO i WASNT JOKING ,BASICALLY i DID A TUNE UP,PLUGS POINTS AIR FILTER,AND I ASKED THE PARTS DUDE FOR A OIL FILTER AND HE GAVE ME ONE....IM GETTING A SERVICE MANUAL SOON.BELIEVE IT OR NOT IM AN AIRCRAFT MECHANIC...THANKS I FIGURED IT OUT WHEN I TOOK THE SCREEN OUT AND BY THE WAY THEY ONLY HAD ONE GASKET ,ANYWAY THANKS ALOT

Probably the one thing anybody who knows anything about engines is surprised at on a beetle: no oil filter, and a screen big enough to let flies through. Part of the charm of a beetle.

When the Americans started putting oil filters on cars they clamed an increase of 400% on bearing life. Now I have had several VW's with over 100,000 miles on them and one with over 200,000 miles on it with no oil filter. Will I get 400,000 miles if I add a filter. "NO" You would most likely be better off to change oil a little more often or swithc to Synthetic oil then install the oil filter.
