Dori is a '73 Standard Type-1, and was my first car. She was daily driven for several years back in the '90s and then parked after I left for college. I finally have the funds to make her in to a dedicated race car and she is bound for many long hours in the dirt!
In order to keep from posting and updating build threads on several different forums, I've set up a group for my build on Facebook. I know it's not ideal for everyone, but if you are on Facebook and want to check it out, you can go here ... http://www.facebook.com/DirtyDoriRally
I am on the page daily to talk to people about the build and answer questions and have technical discussions, if you are in to that kind of thing.
Here are a few images (linked, I know ... sorry) to peak your interest ...
Thanks for the interest! |

As a former full time rally team manager in the Canada and US, this is VERY relevant to my interests!
(Sadly, I messed up and starting my rally build on a Golf, not a Beetle. Been kicking myself ever since I started.) |

I won't know till I flip it, will I? Really it's just the hazards. The last panel I did for our LeMons car has lots of funny labels and I decided that I liked this one enough to keep it.
Bandi, I'm pretty excited about getting her finished. A local guy has been building a MK2 Golf rally car for stage rally events. He apparently ran out of cash to finish it and it's for sale now. Guess it happens a lot.
Did you guys like the Facebook page to keep up with the build? I should have the clutch stuff in today ... pretty excited about it. Sadly, the car is no where near the point where it can be installed. :( |

I really keep considering building one of these. We just recently had Rallycross added to our local SCCA group. This thread is pushing me to consider this more seriously.

Keith, if you attend and event and co-drive with someone you will be hooked. Try it. Tons of fun!

Working on blueprinting.
1 3/4" exhaust is here. Still have to paint it for some protection from the elements.

Are you gonna have enough axle clearance once the weight of the engine and body are applied? I mean, those two angular braces running from the shock towers down to the trans mount look as though they're gonna be mightly close once all's said and done. Otherwise, I've subscribed... Keep up the good work! |

I sure hope so. lol
With stock axles, the answer seems to be yes. We've put 600+ lb on the rear and bounced on it a bit and at full droop it gets REAL close. But, that's with very specific force applied and no shocks to dampen it. If it hist the bump stops, it will touch the bar. With larger axles, yes, it will touch and I'll have to rethink the design.
With the body on, the suspension doesn't move at all. I haven't fully loaded the rear with an engine et, but I know it will settle a bit at that point.
Either way, you are correct ... it's very close. I'm going to watch it. |

| Thanks for the link. That is an awesome build. We are making some similar decisions, but for different reasons it seems. He's got some neat ideas that I may have to "borrow." |

| It's been a while since I've posted here, but I wanted to let you all know we'll be back in GA this weekend working on Dori and we plan to live stream some video of the work. We will be mainly working on paint and roll cage installation. You will be able to find the stream here - http://www.ustream.tv/channel/touringbubble - starting Saturday morning. |

Super cool build, anxiously waiting for the next update.
I have a question on your last pic. It looks like you may have a cutting(steering)brake in front of the shifter, then a brake bias controller as well as a hydraulic parking brake lock. Am I seeing that correctly?
Also which steering hub did you get for the Momo wheel? |

You are correct. There is a hydraulic handbrake to initiate controlled slides, a bias valve (which may be useless with how weak the rear brakes seem to be) and a park lock due to the removal of the OE handbrake.
The hydraulic handbrake actually has a mechanical lock, but I had to modify the bracket to reverse the throw which rendered it nearly useless. I could do some more fab work to make it work if the park lock doesn't do what it needs to. I know some people have problems with them.
The hub is a combination of the Grant adapter and an eBay aluminum Grant 3-bolt to universal 6-bolt adapter. On top of that is an NRG quick release. It sets the wheel off a bit. |

Thanks, for the info, especially on the steering wheel. I've been wondering how guys are able to adapt the NRG piece. My seats are so far back to get the searing position I want that I could stand to have the wheel back a bit.
Not sure if you knew this but NRG makes a thin removable hub. |

I looked at the thin hub but the position isn't too bad as it sits. My wife will also drive and if it becomes an issue for her I can swap it out or machine the adapter a little differently.
Dave! Thanks for chiming in! Big fan of the car man. |
