On the upside you may be able to trade someone who has a nice 36 hp judson but only has a 40 h.p. engine. I think there may be a little price difference so maybe your judson plus a few hundred bucks will do the trick

surely you could modify the carb riser section on a spare 36hp manifold to match the relocated port on the 40hp judson.

If you cut the 40hp intake center portion and weld it onto the cut-down 36hp intake manifold so that the carb flange is further away from the fan housing by the same distance as it is on a 40hp manifold, it should bolt right up fine.

why perpetrate a hack job? do it right, find someone to trade with...

36hp Judsons are generally not available, and they cost more on average. Intake manifolds are cheap and both styles are readily available. I don't think it's 'hack' to modify an intake manifold to run a Judson. A Judson setup is a modification from bone-stock, as are many other mods typically done for higher performance from a 36 or 40hp. It's also easily reversible, as it's a bolt-on mod, you just need another original manifold to put it back to stock. Early Judsons are rare and expensive, but later versions still seem to be generally available for reasonable pricing.

One purists hack job is another racers high performance.
