Hello
I am buying a 1968 restored Karmen Ghia - in excellent condition. Engine, transmission, brakes have been rebuilt. The engine is the "super beetle" and provides great power. It burns no oil.
However the owner told me he is getting 15mpg. I understand the car should be around 25mpg.
He has driven the car 2500 miles since 1994
Could a simple tune up correct the issue? Or is it more involved?
Please help |

| A tune up may take care of it ,but odds are it needs to have the carburetor rebuilt or rejetted. |

| What is the correct fuel rating for the city and highway for the superbeetle motor? |

The super beetle engine is not unique. It was the same engine as in the non-supers, depending on the year.
At the base of the generator/alternator stand, there should be a series of letters & numbers stamped there, beginning with two large numbers like "AE".
That should tell you what vintage your engine is, and should also get you into the right area for all the specs.

As per your mileage, you really should get in the mid-upper 20's for mileage out of that car (I'm going to assume it's a 1600dp engine). If he was getting 15mpg, he was either romping it constantly, letting it idle a lot, or never getting it out on the road at all.
