my 69 just had a slit cut with a knife (about an inch) in the appropriate place, you will see a break in the channel at the spot.

er... doesn't the throttle cable pass through the bellhousing tin? I've never had to trim the seal, why would this be the case? :?

My 1970 tin has a hole for the throttle cable as well.

the doghouse shroud I put on also has hole for the tube and rear repo firewall tin also has hole for tube although it was off abit. doing the measurements it appears the tube will exit tin into area where the firewall seal is and there is a relief in the wall. Just want to do it right.

Hi ovghiaguy,
not sure how far advanced you are with the engine fitment, but I recently mocked up the repro bellhousing tin against a spare engine and gearbox on the bench. In addition to the misplaced hole you mentioned for the throttle tube, I found the tin gets sandwiched between the engine and gearbox unless some of it is trimmed away. I've got some good pictures that show the mods but they're on my home computer (I'm at work) so I can post them later if you haven't already discovered this little foul up.

Yes folks, the rear tin has a hole for the throttle tube/cable, but..... the seal on my later car comes down over the throttle tube, hence the slit. Mine was stock German tin so it will be good to get advice/pix on the repro tin.

Here's the tin pics, it's getting difficult to find genuine tin that isn't rusted away so I ordered a piece of repro bellhousing tin just to have ready in case I can't get an OG piece between now and my future engine swap. I'm aware of the general poor fit and finish of far eastern tinware and there's no way I'd buy an engines worth of the stuff but this was cheap enough to chuck away if it was no good.
So, first impressions weren't bad, it wasn't wrinkled and the pressings and cut-outs were quite well defined. It seemed to line up with the head tins OK and the gap around the oil cooler outlet was uniform too.
The first thing to show up was the misplaced throttle tube hole, I have no idea why it's so far out but it is. I just scribed round the throttle cable tube and cut a V shaped piece out rather than drill a hole. I made the cutout large enough to accept a 3/8" ID grommet.
It was clear that the region around the gearbox had more metal than a genuine piece of tin, I could see this by how close it was sitting to the location lip that centres the engine in the bellhousing and by just laying an OG piece on top.
bolting up my spare 'box showed the extent of the overlap.
I scribed a line in the tin and trimmed the excess metal off about 5mm past the line just to be on the safe side.
Hope this is some help, It's hard to understand why stuff can't just be made correctly, but there you go. |
