Today I was trying to help a Buddy and his Dad straighten out some wiring in their ride.
Got a couple of questions.
Does anyone know where the blue wire goes to after the fuse box?
Is the 12 volt hot to the coil supposed to have a fuse /come from the fuse box?
Everything is a mess and the blue wire started to melt as we were testing the other leads. Trying to track the short and straighten the rest out.
We found a wiring diagram on line, but this car seems to have it own personal set up. Just need these questions answered if possible, not looking for a link to another forum or a suggestion to check the technical or archives sections.
Where does the blue wire goes after it leaves the fuse block?
Is the 12 volt hot to the coil fused.
Answers please, suggestions, no please. I've followed a day full of suggestions, I need simple facts.
Thanks,

On the Bugpak/Empi harness one 12ga. blue wire came from the dimmer to the fuse block and two 12ga. blue wires went from the other side of fuse block to the low beams.
There was also a 16ga. blue wire that went from the fuse block to the horn and another 16ga. blue wire that went from the fuse block to the wiper switch.
On the Bugpak/Empi harness there was no fuse on the coil wire.

Kind of need to know if its stock VW wiring or aftermarket.... If its a after market, its anybodies guess.....
Only blue wire leaving fuse block on standard bug harness goes to KI lamp which I believe is HI-Beam indicator....
IF its a aftermarket wiring harness or a home brew harness you only option is to trace wire and see where it goes or look at all the connection on whole vehicle to see where other end goes....
A "blue" wire is a pretty vague description without some supporting information....
Standard VW (factory) wiring does no have a fuse on coil wire...

Thanks guys, BIG help ! ! !
It IS a VW harness, hopefully it'll be all figured out by this afternoon.
Right now the power hot to the coil is the same wire that feeds the headlight switch. Is this correct or should the 12 hot to coil be coming from another source?
Thanks,

Umm....... This is 67 wiring diagram -- pretty easy to follow and pretty much representative of what VW did through the years.... Of course later ones were more complex...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/bug66.jpg
By the diagram, the 12 volts for coil comes from ignition switch to "supply" side (unfused side) of first fuse and then to coil (black wire on diagram) ... It is virtually direct with no fuses ...
