| I have a 70 bay and was getting a loud screaching. I took the Alternator out and found the bolts loose holding the fan on by a thread! long story short im new at VW's and this Alternator assembly is a frankenstein! The shims are on the back side of the fan shroud along with like four washers..There are washers on the front of the alternator as well..I need help with the proper assembly! I know ill have to adjust the shims but I cant figure out whats suppose to be on the back 1 washer 2? no shims? how am I suppose to get the washers off of the front? Im not real technical and I know it can be frustrating  |

| Shoot pictures of what you have and post them here. That way we'll know what you're dealing with. |

Yup, pictures are probably the best way to get quick help.
As a small aside...it's common to store extra shims somewhere on the generator/alternator shaft in case they are needed later... so you will likely find shims in several spots. :) |

You use whatever number of shims you need to make the fan fit properly in the shroud. There are no fixed
number of shims required. To remove shims, of course you need to undo the 36 mm fan nut and remove the
fan, etc. |

You posted a photo of what looks like the pulley end of gen/alt. Big mystery to me what that
has to do with fan or fan shroud. Please explain. |

you are grappling in the muddy water and cannot picture how it is supposed to work. Do you have any books with photos of how it supposed to work? Maybe a VW bus repair manual? |

Sounds to me like you really need one of these for the specific fine details:
And one of these for the basic concepts and procedures:

| Thanks everyone! I was confused of the amount of washers and shims used.. I found the issue I was looking for was loose nuts on the back of the backing plate, and what I thought was washer on the front of the alt. was a new shim that was stuck. P.S. I have a manual on the way in the mail! |
